This is what New York needs as a signature tower!

Something like this:

Guangzhou Chow Tai Fook Center: 1739ft/530m

or this:

Shenzhen Ping An Finance Center: 2165ft/660m

Maybe someone needs to book a plane ticket for AS & GG to China so they can get some inspiration from there ... argh, I'm so angry now.

The last place New York City needs to look for Inspiration is ... somewhere that's not New York City ...

NYC is and always will be where everyone ELSE gets ideas from ...

This tower in all ways so far is a dissapoimtment, height and design, but its another stepping stone for something to come and be bigger and better.

Maybe in the past yes, but surely not these days. China gets all the good stuff, you have to admit that. And I'm not talking about the height but about the design. Of course you can find tacky ones too but the majority of Chinese megatalls are well designed.

And for the first time ever I find myself in the position of actually preventing a NYC project to see the light of day. Never thought this would happen!

Is there no doubt that the design is final or could they change the design and if how likely is this?
In my opinion the design is, mhhh, not good.....

Hunser - No, majority in China is awful to bad.

Actually when you look at NYC It's hard to find bad supertall project. One57 turned out great, 432 is just classy just like 107 West 57th and Tower Verre - these are in another class. WTC1 and WTC2 are not as good, but you can say that in China we can find similar projects. And you can't judge this while they won't show us good quality renders.

Try to admire your own backyard, because there is a lot to be proud of.

If I remember right, someone was talking about the facade being silver-ish? So hold your horses. Let's see better renderings. The base is some kind of mess but I believe there will be some elegant details to make it right. Just look at the street level facade on 57th street.

The irony of this whole thing is that many Chinese supertalls are designed by ... you guessed it ... American firms!

- Shanghai Tower, Gensler
- Ping An, KPF
- Guangzhou CFT, KPF
- Wuhan Greenland Center, AS+GG (aha!)
- Tianjin CTF, SOM
- Citic Plaza Beijing, KPF

And I could go on and on ...

@ Funkyskunk2, I posted your renderings on SSP, just an FYI.

As for the tower, outside of pure height, there isn't a real distinctive feature here. 432 has the sheer verticality and proportions, and 107 and Verre speak for themselves, and One57 has some nice features as well. But this thing, throw some blue glass on it, and it's just a couple of boxes. No setbacks, no curves, no crown. The height is impressive, and Extell is going to make a killing on this thing, but given that they labelled One57 "a gift to the city," and were big on pushing through a quality design, and came through on that, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.

432 park ave is great because of its crazy proportions, structural facade and unique features like spacing at each mech floor or recessed spaces around each window. It's elegant but far from simple. 225 current design on the other hand pictures messy structure and boring glass cladding. Nor simple or elegant. Not sure how you can compare the two.

Then why did you even began the topic 'better is in China'?

Every city and country has it's own aestethics. Architects can be from USA but that doesn't change the fact, that they usually take inspiration from the places they design for.
NYC is the best site in the world in terms of XIX-present architecture. Moreover, It's lack of space is usually significant for the design of the building.
Maybe you are just tired of NYC's aesthetics and It's space limitations? Consider that.

I think, the design is great! It is at least much better than 432 park's.

I think we need to all wait to reserve judgement, the height is good (will be the new tallest roof in NYC...though I am surprised they didn't add 30ft to make is taller than Willis).

Same with the design, it is certainly unique and I really feel that the cladding is going to make or break it. The massing a few pages back can really only be used to look at the height and overall shape.

I'm tired of NYC's mediocrity. The city needs to show some balls and build a tower which will be tall (500m+) and have an iconic design. A Tower Verre calibre with a greater height would be a bold statement. But no, even 1,250ft was too tall for Amanda Burden (who works for the CPC). Pathetic.

Why is it that the worst in their respective professions usually seem to get the biggest opportunities? I guess big mouths and small talent go hand in hand.

I can't see how those chinese towers you mentioned are more 'iconic' (whatever that is) than let's say One WTC, 432 PA or 107 West.
And after all the deal is about height or design? Because now you seem to be lost in your statements.

It seems to me that the images from the video are too vague to draw any conclusions...though I agree that from what I can see here that the it is a bit disappointing. But I am going to keep an open mind until I can really see what is going on. I have seen this too many times before...drawing conclusions without all the facts. Nice though to finally see something and the scale of the building is impressive.
