I personally find this design iconic! The overhang gives the tower a light floaty feel and looking at those renders closer there seems to be some silver grid and facade detailing going on

And after all the deal is about height aro design? Because now you seem to be lost in your statements.
I'm not lost, just bitter as to how this great opportunity was not used to build something really worthy of the New York skyline, i.e. a signature tower. And I always complained about the height (see previous pages), before I even got to see those "renderings".

But let's stop here. Clearly this is a let-down for all of us (for some it's the height cut, for some the design and for some both).

I am positive the design we see is not the last one.

I'm not saying NYC can't do higher or even better in terms of design. It's just this China design reference that got me a little bit confused - in my point of view your opinion was simply unjust for NYC supertall designs.

Oh cry about it, will ya? Your lust for height is completely disconnected from reality. The CPC is concerned with what the city needs, not CTBUH trophies.

I follow the Tower Verre project very closely, and Amanda Burden (she's a real burden) chopped off Verre's head by 200 feet because she didn't like the top. According to her, the tower didn't meet the required standards to be in the same height league as the ESB. Never came it to her mind to give Nouvel a chance to maybe, just maybe redesign the very top. So yes, in a way the CPC killed one of the most iconic towers in New York since the Chrysler Building. It will be built, but hardly noticeable on the skyline.

As for the other behemoths (One57, 432 PA etc), they are "as-of-right". The CPC has no say in how tall they can go.

Maybe the stress of having to deliver on one of the most prestigious and prominent construction sites in the world was too much for Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill. They seem to do better in secondary cities or developing markets.

In looking at this a little more closely...given the complexity of the lower portions of the building...and given the fact that this meeting was only addressing a specific issue the cantelever...the renderings presented are geared only to address this issue and I feel are definitely holding something back...the upper part just does not mesh with the lower...I can't help feel that the final design of the tower is being held back until a decision is made with regard to the cantilever...(any news from last night as to a decision???) I just don't think they are done with this yet.

Am I missing something...I can't seem to find a thread for 220CPS?

Well someone's certainly enthusiastic about the design.

Wow! so far this glimpse of a release by AS+GG has been pretty controversial.

We all know JamesDL said the design called for a curvy tower before going back into the re-design procees. If true, I was totally caught off guard with this boxy itineration.

Why such a drastic change? Extell did not like it or was it Nordstrom or both? All I know is this.. Architects especially here in NYC has to try and appease their clients and find the middle ground to gain acceptance for their project with the powerful city council, and powerful residents.

Designing especially in NYC is unique and complex. Architects here are not given such an open space to work with. They have to work with limited and sometimes unusual spaces, Zoning laws that govern the effect of shadows, height, use, setbacks, streetscapes and the list goes on. These laws in effect put shackles for architects to design freely like they can in other cities.

I have to say I am a bit disappointed with the reveals and I'm optimistically hoping that this this is not the real deal and the sole purpose at that hearing was to solely show what the tower looks like at the base and how the cantilever would look like over the LM building.

We have to keep in mind the purpose of this meeting was to show how the tower will cantilever. Extell and AS+GG was not there to get approval of the overall look of the tower. They are just gunning for the green light to do this and finally, Once they get the green light, AS+GG will release the real deal design that is going to stun.

Am I hoping too much? Could this be a possibility? I mean I really don't understand how all parties involved could actually be satisfied with the bottom half of this tower with the exception of the Nordstrom portion at the base which I think is quite nice.

Lust for height?! Do you think NYC is Mayberry? NYC has a tired and boring skyline. You want height limitations, move to DC.

LOL, they may be very high, but nothing really original. It is just reworked/ updated American design from 40-60 years ago.

It is not that just height makes skyline beautiful, but its originality, beauty, sense of proportion, details and etc.
