So we don't have to read two pages of this argument about building on demand vs. planned economies and arbitrary Cold War classifications rehashed for the 1,000th time, Robert doesn't consider China to be part of the first world -- yes, even the big cities; yes, even though they're economically practically different countries than the rest of developing China. Don't bother getting into it. Please. I will knock my computer off my desk if I have to read it one more time.

Now can somebody post some makeshift, photoshopped renders or something while we wait for the official ones?

Although, infrastructure-wise, China is rather ahead and hardly not first world. Penn Station anyone?

If the bases of the supertalls are done with care and attention to detail, i'm fine with them. It's those boring or obnoxious bases that do nothing for the human city that is starting to annoy me, not just the towers above. I think this base will be decent enough.

If it looks like that it will be obnoxious aesthetically. There is little effort being put into making something worth looking at. Just design by zoning-envelope. I'm all for height, but come on, this isn't Chicago in the 70s.

I only commented massing of the building. There's no detail to that render anyway (just some setbacks).

But if executed right I wouldn't mind such shape. Just please don't clad it with plain blue glass

I've walk those streets on a regular basis, just as much as the Trocadero or les Halles in Paris, I wouldn't trade any of them for greenwich village, downtown manhattan or Soho. To each its own, perhaps you should respect that. And please take that city vs city to the appropriate forum.

I think it's boring. It reminds me of some modernist box tower from the 70s.. But that's what you get when you do towers in NYC. Design by zoning-envelope.

I understand that, but it's hard to believe he doesn't find London attractive when so many of its streets are just as ornamented as Paris' streets. If it's architecture not layout we are dealing with, I'd take London's variety over Paris.

New York has pushed the "tower meets street level" - philosophy to a maximum. That's why so many of us here love New York supertalls - they meet the street in a super dense area where people gather / attend their business.

But so many are dull. Why don't we see more inventive and creatively done bases? Not to mention the disgusting bases of all the ugly hotel towers built by hack architects.

I would agree with that! but I would also agree with those who said that there are enough non-supertall construction in NYC that matches the modernization you see anywhere else in the world (WTC Path station, 7 and second avenue subway) as well as lowrise building that might not be as much talked about but are quite well designed (The Pyramid,Zaha's building on the high line, 400PAS...) so NYC 's got enough going on and shouldn't look up to any other city. I'm done with the comparison, let's get back to that disapointing tower that will be 225 W 57th. Still crossing my fingers that i'll be peasantly surprised tho

It's merely a shadow of a building in that picture. Simple structures are made by the facades. Thats why I will never put 1wtc with it's boring glass over twins wrapped in aluminum work of art. The same goes for 107 West. Simple shape, spectacular cladding. So simple designs with some setbacks (agree perfect boxes are a bit boring alone) and great facade would work fine for me. Just again no glass only facade please
