they certainly have all the space they need to build 1550ft tower.
The only other place I can think of with such an empty and large footprint is also on 57str just past 7th avenue.

No. That building is the landmarked BF Goodrich building that will be integrated into the Nordstrom tower. I believe plans for that building will be the Hotel portion of the Nordstrom tower. Landmarks already approved the job/alteration of tower.

Great news! Damn, we're all so spoiled, but hey, I guess we can thank NY for that!

Imagine what people on this forum would do is supertall construction was banned...

After One57, 107 W. 57th, 432 Park, Torre Verre and 225 W57th are finished no further Supertall skyscrapers should be allowed to cast shadows on Central Park ... any new Supertall district should take this into account IMHO.

So you'd be opposed to 650 Madison then? I think there could still be two or three more supertalls built in that district, and I don't believe there is anything like the cantilever issue for 225 West 57th that would preclude the right of a developer to go supertall if deemed desirable. Obviously while there won't be, nor should there be, something like a dozen or more going up in the area simply because of feasibility, it still seems that there is room for two, three, maybe four more in the area. It all gets spread out some anyway naturally, nobody building wants to ruin the views for their own towers...but this increasing "Not in my Central Park" Nimby-ism seems to be more based on speculation and a bias against supertalls more than anything else.

I find it hard to believe that any of these towers would cast sigificant shadow on central park, especially in summer.

In summer and spring not that much, but they will in winter-autumn, although it is true that a single tower will not cast a significant amount of shadow since the shadow will pass through the park within I think about two or three hours, casting shadows for just a few minutes at a time in a given spot.
BUT, the more towers are built the more amount of shadow it will be, so I think it could eventually become a concern.

I hate shadow, though in such dense and vertical areas as Manhattan it is just absolutely inevitable. I wouldn't want to live in a lowrise in Manhattan. In a tall building yes, because there I would have sun, but not in a lowrise
