San Francisco has this problem so bad that it often threatens to grind all development to a halt. I agree with Kanto, in a dense place like Manhattan (or Midtown at least) getting upset about shadows is a little ridiculous, but I guess I can understand the desire to keep Central Park as sunny as possible.

this shadow is not like permanent shadow like in the case with Equitable building in downtown. it is changing its place during the day, so nothing will wither and die in Central park due to lack of sun. rest easy

Seriously, if people are worried about shadows from Skyscrapers, don't move to a big city with lots of Skyscrapers
My advice would be to, Buy a car and a Lawn mower, then buy a real house about 5 miles from your desk. Trust me, after growing up in Tampa Florida as a kid, you'll get a better view of the skyline from 5 miles out. As a young child, I could name every building in the Tampa cluster, but once I was downtown in the midst, I had no clue where I was. Last year, went back, and needed my phone with Google maps, zoomed, to find my way around the city

They would only cast shadows over the very SE corner of the park, no farther north than Wolman rink. Look at a map and remember that the sun rises in the east, so any shadows over that small part of the park would happen over tree-lined areas in the late afternoon, as the sun sets in the west.

It's almost like they think they're in some sort of horror movie....

The Vanishing on (5)7th Street

The population of Detroit New York has almost completely disappeared, but a few remain. As daylight disappears they realize that the Dark is coming for them.

Remember the park stretches to the northeast not north. During winter months the shadows should stretch pretty far. I don't know how accurate google's shadows are but here is near sunset on the solstice and March 1st.

Of course all the buildings are blocking light by that point but even in the afternoon the shadows should hit the baseball fields.

During the winter months Central Park is miserable anyways unless you're a tourist shelling out $50 for a 10 minute carriage ride. A shadow is the least of its concerns.

I remember reading some article posted here a while ago saying the foundation itself will take two years to complete. Hopefully that won't be true. Waiting for 432 park ave to get from the ground was long enough.

But anyway great news they finally started working on this big boy

No, only when piling begins. Will take some time before we can move this to the u/c forums.

yep, it's going to take a while. Just glad action has finally.. finally started.

I expect both the excavation and foundation work to be completed in less than 2 years. Est. Completion date - feb 2015, structure rise immediately following and tower completed late 2017, in time for Nordstrom Store opening in early 2018
