Those buildings are going up for one of 2 reasons:
1) to leverage the value of the surrounding land and thus encourage it to be developed (see: Burj Dubai)
2) Structurally more attractive because land is kept artificially expensive (see: China).

Another way to think about it, is the actual useable/leasable area of the building, not the height, is what matters. Intuitively, it makes sense to a developer that he can command higher rents in a more "prestigious" building, and - more importantly - he maximizes profit by buying less land to and building more. Simple supply and demand.

NY firms need new space, firms in Shanghai need space period.

Having a skyscraper designer in your skyline does not look all too impressive though. They're usually not even two meters tall.

And he's kneeling. He'd be 3,000 meters standing up.

There actually is a possibility for this one. Don't get your hopes up for a 2,000 ft. megatall here though.

A new obs. deck at 400m+?

http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article...TATE/312019986

Room at the top for observation decks
New buildings mean more competition for stalwarts Empire State, Rock Center.

I don't think it will happen. I hope that Extell shows the design soon.

I agree. At least not in residential towers.

Well at least this confirms the design is still in flux.

Same here, but if Gary does decide to include one, that would mean a more elaborate crown and maybe an even taller tower?

If that's the case by all means please have a deck Gary!!

After the initial CB5 meeting, my friend, who is directly involved in this project, stated unequivocally that the tower portion is a massing model and not the final design.

George Artz from Extell reiterated that in the WSJ.

I don't know how different the final design will be (maybe very different or possibly not that different), and neither did she. But that was not the final design. This tower doesn't even have a construction loan yet.
