I vote we use a new word for describing an architectural spire that a lot of people don't think should count as a spire.

We'll call it the Thingamajig.

Boy, 1WTC sure has a large Thingamajig.

I thankfully avoid updates of this, if the massing model design is the final one.

It has been made unmistakably clear by Extell that the final design has not been completed.

Only in NY (among cities in the first world) could two super talls be rising simultaneously on adjacent plots.

It would be nice if the towers would meet some x00 meters above the street...

A solid 900 footer and a 1,400+ footer rising side by side. In close vicinity there's already a nearly completed 1,000 footer. And in short walking distance we got a beautiful 1,350 footer in the works. Further on there's a giant 1,400 footer rising in the neighborhood. And close by a very sexy 1,000 footer will grace our skyline.

Only in New York.

That's true. There's also the Park Lane and 650 Madison, which will be redeveloped.

Midtown Manhattan (excluding Hudson Yards/the west side):

217 West 57th Street: 1,423
432 Park Avenue: 1,398
111 West 57th Street: 1,350
Tower Verre: 1,050
One57: 1,005
220 Central Park South: 920
45 East 60th Street: 780
250 West 57th Street: 715

Towers of which I am not sure about the exact height:

One Vanderbilt
36 Central Park (Park Lane)
650 Madison Avenue
425 Park Avenue
610 Lexington Avenue
341 Madison Avenue (MTA HQs)
138 East 50th Street
50 West 57th Street
237 Park Avenue
740 8th Avenue
239 West 52nd Street (Roseland)
Shvo Tower
Hotel Pennsylvania redevelopment

NYC WILL HAVE THE WORLD'S TOP SKYLINE! Dubai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, et al won't be able to compete with us once we add what Midtown is lacking: a bit of height.

We have the history. The varying styles. The tradition. The pagaentry.

We are in more movies for a reason!

Don't get into a measuring contest. One beautiful highrise is worth a thousand ugly supertall boxes. Getting caught up in a race to the top is already proving detrimental. These supertalls in New York are unusually thin, after all. Combined with 1WTCs spire imbalance and New York right now is a lot of smoke and mirrors for the sake of a few meaningless numbers.

That sounds like sour grapes. Every city in the world would love our "smoke and mirrors."

I'm of the mindset that design matters more than height, but that new batch of skyscrapers and super tall has both ( Tower Verre, Steinway, One57, the WTC, the HY towers, 56 Leonard....) so I don't see where you get ugly boxes from; and yea it will enhance what is already the most popular skyline in the world. And unusually thin?? Have you ever heard of Hong Kong? Their skyline is one the best in the world.

That makes no sense. Residential buildings are naturally slimmer than office towers. We aren't building as many office towers (or office towers as big) as third world cities, because we already have 500+ million square feet of office space.

Any city on Earth would bend over backwards to have our residential market. There are at least 4 (of which I know) units on the market for $100 million+. The penthouse at One57 sold to one of Wall Street's top investors for $90 million.

This isn't Dubai. We aren't building unoccupied sticks.

Just incredible and a huge boost for this already impressive block.

Not true. There's a lot to envy about NYC. A lot. But the height of the buildings is a minor issue. After all, if height is all you desire, you'll never be satisfied. There will always be a taller building in the works. A taller skyline. A higher pinnacle.

A tall building will only be tall for a short while. But a beautiful building will be beautiful forever.

I'm not saying there aren't beautiful structures going up in New York. I'm one of the few people left in the world who thinks the entire WTC complex is a staggering piece of design. But when people start making bullet point lists of roof heights - as though that mattered at all in the long run - I sometimes feel they're missing the wood for the trees.

It's also what separates New York from, say, Hong Kong or Dubai. Height alone is ugly, and those who chase height above all else are themselves ugly, on the inside.
