I'm surprised they aren't just taking the money, but I would be for it if they manage to stop the cantilever (which I've never liked) and force Extell to build taller to see over 220 CPS.

The thing is that they can only stop the cantilevering, but NOT the project in itself. Obviously the vast majority of us want a better design than just shown... Robert Walpole I think hinted one will be forthcoming soon and it BETTER be good. Still good art, good architecture or not they'll get a 1,500 ft. behemoth in their neighborhood even by turning down the offer... Extell could take away the whole cantilever and build as of right as high as they think feasible.

I really hope RW is right that we'll get a fine tower here. So far, all the 57th towers have great design and height. Slowly but surely I'm getting tired of this project to be honest ... once our greatest hope, the Nordstrom Tower quickly turned into a nightmare lol.

yea I would be very surprised if the cantilever is not approved by the SAL. They would be crazy to turn down all that cash! crazy imo.

What's the name of that beautiful 4-story lowrise (w/Lee's) in the background?

Here's the lighting study mentioned in the "Vote For It" ad.
http://theartstudentsleague.org/Link...M%3D&tabid=396

On page 4 is a comparison of the massing of the building with and without the cantilever. They're the same height. The only difference is that the mass of the building shifts closer to Central Park without the cantilever. It's not quite as fugly, though still ugly... so I hope the students vote against it.

^ Technical Note from document:

Quote:
Both buildings were modeled by the ESC. The building with the cantilever was based on plans submitted to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The building without the cantilever was designed by Michael Kwartler to follow the intent of the building with the cantilever as much as possible while removing the cantilever.
The design w/o cantilever is designed by someone from their organization, imagining what it would look like without any data provide either by AS+GG and Extell.

IMO, The study was made by the Arts league and they should have showed a taller tower w/o cantilever if they wanted the vote to be approved. lol.

Good find on the pdf. Here is the blueprint from the document:

BTW, there seems to be a discrepancy about the height of the bottom of the cantilever. The Extell blueprints (vertical view) stated that it would begin at 291' above street level. The ASL light study states it is "currently proposed" at 350 feet above curb level.

I used the 150-foot measurement as a baseline to derive the proportions of the tower, and got 115 feet wide and 99 feet deep (rounded off). The square footage per floor would be 11,404, which is 30% higher than that of 432 Park. This does not account for the carve-out near the top of 217 W 57th.

So the building will have a cantilever no matter what? just instead it COULD be moved to the CP side instead

I actually prefer the look of the cantilever of this Landmarked building as it adds some depth to the side of the facade judging by those mass models

A cantilever is where part of a structure hangs over and out from the facade basically

I'm not sure which version looks more like it would topple over, so we may as well hope fore the taller version without the cantilever.
