Pardon my French here, but I'm not really that sure that this will be an "icon" for New York as much as "yet another really tall, cool building". It barely misses out beating 1WTC to the record of the city's tallest (what happened to the spirit of the twenties?), and its location is good, but not stellar like Hudson Yards', where the tower is located right by the waterfront. Huge towers mirrored in the river will be more prominent than an even taller tower in the middle of the city. Nordstrom Tower will have to compete with 432 PA and the other "sticks" sticking up around Central Park. Besides, at the current pace, by the time this tower is getting built, another, taller skyscraper might be in the works someplace else.

It will be a landmark for sure, but an icon? Hardly, I think. And given the reasons why, I'm not really sure whether that is a bad thing or not...

Well when a 1775 foot building isn't an icon I wouldn't complain.

It will be pretty obvious from Central Park which is something many locals and tourists experience and think of when they think of NYC. I think you are right that HY might stick in tourists brains as an icon...but I think that for different reasons. It will have an observation deck and they will remember it for that reason.

Maybe its just me but I don't see as much of a difference between the terms "landmark" and "icon" as you do. I think they are pretty similar.

True... your city is doing quite alright in the skyscraper department if a 1500/1775 foot tower is "not really that exciting"

Those renderings are amazing by the way.

The different elements at the pinnacle are so complicated on their own yet, when combined together, the tower melts so effortlessly into the undulating New York skyline.

You won't be able to even see the cantilever from most angles.

Also it seems more and more buildings are looking like the Citadel

It's to bad that the Nordstrom tower will be shorter.

Is that official? I don't recall reading that anywhere. And is that the roof or the parapet?

lt was in the latest DOB filing. Whether it's the roof or parapet is a mystery.

when they say office i'm assuming they mean the Nordstrom Store on the first few floors.

Bonus shot: Metropolitan Tower's Western perspective is amazing. Due to the tower's triangular shape, the tower appears from the West to be razor thin.

They were working hard today. Here's the site:

I hope it is 1,490 to the roof. I think its about time for America to have a new tallest building, even if it is just by a little. I am a militant roof height guy, so WTC 1 doesn't count, not trying to start an argument just my opinion. The spire height of 1,775 kinda pisses me off. Its like they are trying to set a precedent that no building or spire should be higher than 1,776 feet. I'm not liking where this is going at all.
