FFS, everybody so angry about this tower's height are the same people who deny 1WTC's pinnacle height to be the true height in the first place. With that logic, wouldn't this be NYC's tallest tower and de-crown the undeserving 432 Park Avenue? Shouldn't that make you all happy?

Those kind of limits don't always last forever, for example Philadelphia's city hall was "unpassable" in height for quite sometime until someone realized it was ridiculous and built Liberty Place... then many other skyscrapers followed.

I do also (obviously) hope that is untrue

I think it will basically look like what Yimby posted except about 60 feet taller.

TBH, I'm not at all surprised with this "unwritten" agreement. The WTC had just been completed for crying out loud and needs its time in the sun considering what it really means to the city and the nation.

All it means to me that it's not set in stone and maybe in a few years something would be aloud to eclipse it. Think of it as a moratorium for a couple years to just allow the WTC to reign supreme.
I think if you need a moratorium to 'reign supreme', you're not really reigning at all. And certainly not supremely.

1WTC doesn't need its hand held, like some kindergartner getting a fake diploma. Its achievements are worthy of their own merit, without the rest of the city bowing their heads in some forced deferral of honour.

432 Park is already taller than 1WTC and nobody cares. Nobody is outraged or upset or insulted. In fact, the people of New York cherish the unstoppable ambition of skyscraper construction. It's practically a symbol of their American ideals.

Americans are a sophisticated and intelligent people; they understand context and meaning. The notion that they'd be insulted if another tower (Nordstrom or otherwise) rose to a greater height than 1WTC, well it's just a pathetic way of thinking. This isn't a gentleman's agreement, it's a coward's agreement. I hate it.

Well, people are actually outraged by 432 Park, but it has nothing to do with its relative height compared to 1WTC.

If you think about it. The ground elevation is several dozen feet above that of the WTC. This will top out higher into the atmosphere above sea level then any other structure before

There won't be an observation deck.

When I buy my condo in this building, I may consider using my guest bedroom or my living room as an observation deck. The price of admission... One beer.

It's primarily a residential building above Nordstrom, so there'll be no observation deck. We're getting two great new observation decks that I know of so far with the Time Warner tower at HY and with One Vanderbilt.

Though Trek's sentiment is a damn good one!
