Actually I just remembered, the tubular spires on the Willis Tower are not even cable-stayed, they are not masts, even more credence to being counted as a permanent spire.

I've gotten to the point where I've stopped worrying about which is officially taller with or without a spire. There are so many different kinds of tops of buildings and so many different opinions as to what should count as the official height that it's just that... people's opinions. This tower will have a greater height impact on Manhattan's skyline, and it will be in a different location with different surroundings creating different shadows on Central Park, etc. Blah blah blah... So I vote we concentrate on enjoying watching it rise and keep the conversation around that.

Yes, we should see the first wall soon, as well as a tower crane.

I think that's outdated because with the current design at 1550' it would certainly have more than 88 floors.

I dunno, but couldn't they have further increased ceiling heights?

One of them was just replaced in 2012 actually.

I think Miami High Rise is not referring to that part they are changing on the video, but the lower, fatter section, where those parts are fixed, which I think indeed have not changed since they were first installed. He claims not that the entire antennas, but up to the part of the masts that don't change, should be considered as permanent spires.

But anyway, that video illustrates why Sears Towers antennas are not counted vs 1WTC spire being counted. Once they installed the beacon on top of 1WTC, that's it, it won't change anymore. But the antennas of Sears Tower (at least the top part of them) are replaced every some years, changing the height to the tip constantly.

If some people don't consider any spire at all to be counted as the total height, well, that is another thing, but the video illustrates just why 1WTC spire is counted and Sears' antennas are not.

I'm excited for the new renderings but doubt the design will be much different than what we've already seen.

If it's 1500' to the roof that would be awesome though

I'm more than fine with essentially the same design as we saw but with a slight bump to 1,500 ft plus of course the spire still taking it to 1,775ft. Is it as artistic as Steinway and Verre? No, but it's graceful, refined, classy and very New York and can't wait for it to start soaring out of the ground in the next year!

I hope it's not much different, I love the current design.

^ Did you just calculate the roof height of the Kingdom Tower Kanto?

Anyway, can't wait for the new (official?) renderings. The height will most likely stay the same (1,500' to roof) whereas the design could see some slight changes.

For some reason the max height is 600m.
But I think they don't really need really tall skyscrapers

I think Architecture matters more than the height or size
Being beautiful while serving its purpose is what I expect from a building
I agree about the lack of need...

Also ~450 meter buildings *are* really tall skyscrapers. They're not megatall no, but I think many US cities are going to look just amazing by 2020 and megatalls aren't even needed.

How many cities in the world will have a handful of 400+ meter buildings to the roof like NY will by decades end. Not many at all, NY could even be 400 meter capital

I'm really impressed with the current development in the US (and Canada) although I must say although I do agree that a 500+ meter signature tower (preferably in NY or Chicago) would be ideal.

Every building has a roof For the Kingdom Tower and the Burj Khalifa I had to create a whole roof height measurement system to be able to determine their roof height. In the case of other buildings I merely used the system Skyscraperpage is using and gave it a more exact description. You can find the whole essay in this thread:
