Now we can put to rest the concern of developers adhering to a supposed 1776 ft height cap.

I was just thinking that this is announcement is great news, yes because we get a new NYC/USA tallest, but even more so because the "gentleman's agreement" is off before it even started.

And now that we've dispensed with the misguided patriotism, we can look forward to dealing with our next arbitrary hurdle: the 2000 ft. FAA height cap.

Yes its great news. The number is patriotic because of what it represents in time, it really has nothing to do or should have nothing to do with being the tallest, which the original towers hardly even were for a very short time. Even if there had already been a taller building somewhere in the country, 1 WTC probably still would have been just what it is now. There were proposals for it to be 2000 feet and it wouldn't have been that hard to just make the spire a little bit taller, but they didn't want to do that because that wasn't symbolic. They might have just come to the realization that almost nobody cares about this anyway and even if they ever did it just kind of worn off. from a financial perspective, considering how expensive all the floor space will be above around a thousand feet, there's no reason they wouldn't max out the height would then the given engineering spec (w/o major increases in column or core intrusion). The height of 1 WTC and the "controversy" surrounding its measurement barely made the news for a single day. if the general public does not care and the 1 WTC people don't care, then nobody that matters cares.

That render looks much better regardless of the increased height.

I know that this will sound extremely nerdy, but I gotta say it - this is one of the happiest days in my life. A building who's beauty is surpassed only by the Willis Tower has become the tallest building in the western hemisphere. It's not just the tallest building in the United States, it's not just the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere, it is the tallest building in the western hemisphere because it is taller than the CN Tower. This was my dream, that a New York building will come that will beat the CN Tower and now it has happened. Ladies and gentleman, this building is exactly why I love skyscrapers and why I love development, this is the pure symbol of the highest virtues of urbanity, this is my dream comming true. When I'm excited about something I normally either post a photo of John Boehner or the Christopher Walken's alien dance party, but this news is just so incredible and so fantastic, that today, I simply have to post both

I'm with you.

edit: Only I checked that CN tower is 1,815.4 ft tall... So it's short for a few feet, by the pinnacle.

The cantilever will jut about 30 feet over the adjacent Art Students League building (also known as the American Fine Arts Building). The cantliever will begin about 300 feet above the ground, and about 200 feet above the top of the Art Students League building.
