I wish the spire was attached to the top of the setback, I feel like the design would flow better that way somehow

It's a spire with no aesthetic, commercial or industrial application. An antenna on a residential building? Do they at least get local channels for free from it? What an amenity.

I'm very confused. In every render this building seems very different. What's one to think?

Most renderings have been of the south facade which differs from the north facade pictured here.

The Spire some how completes the design without, it I feel like the flow of the tower is lost.

The skyline looks so strange now but once all these new supertalls go up it is going to be incredible.

I had this theory... What if Barnett intentionally "leaked" the plans to build higher than the WTC in order to test out how the public would react. I was reading different news articles after it was published by NewYorkYimby and people would either comment that New York should build taller, or that they don't care. I don't recall anyone bashing him for wanting to go higher. This could have been his test that proves it will now happen.

Well if that's true he quickly found out how much the public doesn't care. Why would anyone?

I don't think it has to do with being taller than WTC One, but with the fact that after 9/11 there was almost a mass hysteria in NYC about being in a tall building. I think that has mostly gone away now...

It just becomes fodder for public discourse concerning income inequality...we more than got out fill with 432 Park.

I don't think it's so much the public and press he cares about more than by staying under 1776' he can shame the next developer that does end up going over.

Shame them how? Like I said the public doesn't care if there's a building taller than 1WTC. Also, that would be a really crappy thing to do, setting a de facto height cap for NY's skyline.

from YIMBY's instagram. I hope we can get a higher resolution version of this rendering from extell/ AS+GG so we can see the finer details.

Well, the community board is pushing for a moratorium on buildings over 600 ft, while a study is completed on the effects the current crop of buildings have had (i.e. shadows).

Even if it does end up getting approved by the city, which I think is the process, it shouldn't affect anything already approved, and I think the only major thing that will happen is the institution of a public review process for as-of-right developments.

Again, my suspicion that Barnett wants to be as "low profile" as he can be (not snatching the spotlight as the tallest building in the city) grows stronger.

Both those buildings are fantastic, but they seem to be out of balance being so close to each other

Not to be that guy..
But what would happen if there was a fire mid level and the elevators cut out?
The NYFD would have no way to get up there...are there even stairs in the plans?
I wonder if at all the NYFD has any input in design for a worse case scenario.
These questions are not exclusive to this building as any recent super tall would have the same issues.

Of course there are stairs. There are pretty serious fire safety regulations that you have to consider when you design a building like this.
Don't worry, those billionaires will be safe.
