Just to give an idea of how real the shadow effect is. Imagine the Yangtze as Central Park.

That's not the Yangtze, it's the Huangpu...(the Yangtze empties out near the sea, where Chongming island is...)

In any case, the photo you posted shows the situation at sunrise. There are not such significant shadows for the majority of the day: it's pretty much just that way at dawn and dusk (in the first photo below, you will notice that the only shadows cast on the river are from clouds, not the buildings). Needless to say, go walk around The Bund at noon (the western side of the Huangpu in your pic), on a hot summer day, you'll be wishing that there was a true shadow effect

The whole debate about shadows over Central Park is weird, because the park will be in shadow during certain periods, anyways, because the sun is not directly overhead all day long.

Even ignoring the rest of the buildings on the island, the trees themselves cast so much shadow, that you would never even know the difference when all of these buildings go up.

That's not Yangtze... is Huangpu...

Yangtze near Shanghai is about Hudson River + Manhattan + East River put together.

Here is Huangpu (the small one) flow into Yangtze near Shanghai.

At that point, I think it's technically a bay...

just to give another example, it's like the East River's source at the Long Island Sound. if I remember correctly, the Yangtze's mouth at the China Sea isn't very far from Shanghai.

back onto topic, the Hudson River experiences its fair share of shadows, especially near lower manhattan where it is sandwiched between JC and Downtown. It's very similar to what the skyscrapers of Pudong cast upon Huangpu

That guys Shanghai example would hold water if the sun rose in the south in NYC.

Sorry I got the river wrong. I've never been to Shanghai. Thank you for correcting my English which is bad. (Eddie Murphy quote).

Dappled sunlight shining sparsely through the trees is a beautiful and tranquil thing. It doesn't happen so much in the winter when the leaves are missing and the sun is lower in the sky. That's when the shadows on Central Park will happen and that's when you want the sunlight the most because it's cold out.

Anyway, the sun rises in the east and some really tall buildings are rising on 57th street.

I wonder if at all the NYFD has any input in design for a worse case scenario.
These questions are not exclusive to this building as any recent super tall would have the same issues.
every will gather below and yell "jump you rich *******s!"

Which is south west of the park. I'm really not getting your point. Yes there will be some shadows at some points of the day during some time of the year, but the effects would be much greater if these huge buildings were built on 5th Ave or central park west.

You're right... the shadows would cover even more of Central Park with buildings of this size on those streets.

The point I was trying to make with the sentence you quoted was that I was done with that subject and was attempting to move the conversation on. "The sun rises in the east" is an idiom people often use when they want to point out something that is unchangeable. I can't change the fact that these billionaires' part-time dwellings will cast shadows over a wide swath of the park in the winter when sunlight is already at a minimum on the city's greatest public treasure. I was admitting that I am powerless over the rich and wanted to get the conversation back to the actual construction of this building.

The amazing thing is is that New York may even loom like that by 2020! Never mind 2030

Vandibikts crown looks beautiful like that, would be great if the final product was like that!

Whole bunch of towers missing from that picture regardless, especially downtown.
