Manhattan's older office towers were thin because of how they set back to comply with regulations, which generally made them massive at their base and slender towards their apex. Such towers would never be built today. If you were paying attention to the current status of these buildings, you would know most have been or are being renovated into residential towers. 70 Pine Street and the Woolworth Building are notable recent examples. The Barclay Building - the art deco tower which sits just north of 1 WTC - is another recent example.

Great update! Yes, it's close to go up, but it'll take 2 or 3 months until it'll be at ground level or a bit above.

In general yea, mixed use is the future, it makes a lot more sense.
I'd argue that residential-only is the future, actually. Big companies don't want offices in highrises anymore. They want quiet campuses in environmentally friendly eco-sheds out in the suburbs. Monolithic glass edifices have become a bit of a liability. Look at how difficult it's been to fill the WTC towers.

Back in the day, the dominant company in America was Sears, and they built a towering black box in the middle of Chicago. Now, the company is Apple, and they've built a white circle in the middle of Cupertino. And they're not the only one.

I don't see it but one of the two main architects, Adrian Smith was the lead architect on the burj Khalifa and is from Chicago. You can see the Chicagan influence in many of his designs.

Those walls on the left side of the photos are cores of the structure? Look like they can rise above construction pit fence very soon!

The bottom section of the Favco crane looks like an internal climbing section. But I could be wrong.

Please rename the tower to "Central Park Tower" in the thread title.
