The building looks lovely and I'm sure well-designed but it still looks really thin. Like really thin

We all know you need Benji's too be able to live in NYC. Without them, you better go find a bench in Central Park to sleep on.

Barnett sold a small parcel within the building plot of 220 CPS and the lease of a parking garage to Vornado for $194 million. As part of the agreement, the tall tower portion of 220 CPS was shifted to the west, and to the 58th Street side of the block. When added to the 30-foot cantilever over the American Fine Arts Building (aka the Art Students League) negotiated by Extell, this means that Central park Tower will have excellent views of the park. And of a limestone-cladded building that will house some of the priciest apartments in the world, including possibly a $250 million penthouse.

Story about the deal I mentioned above:

As a kid who liked to draw cities, this is how I pictured "the future" 30 years ago. Well, I guess it's here. 10/21/2015 is almost here as well, but no anti-gravity yet. Oh well, at least the architecture is here.

In Vietnam, people are also constructing a high-end building named Central Park.
They were greatly inspired by the Central Park Tower of the New York, and Vietnamese people are looking forward to its intended completion in 2017.

Don't forget, structural engineers are only human too:

Quote:
Due to a design oversight and changes during construction, the building as initially completed was structurally unsound. For his original design, LeMessurier calculated wind load on the building when wind blew from due north, east, south, or west, blowing directly against one side. He did not calculate wind loads when the wind blew from one of the quarters [..] against a corner.
99% invisible has a great podcast on this well known Citigroup Center story.

Anecdotes aside, I'm sure that the load on these new skinny towers has received considerable scrutiny. The only potential weakness is that most (all?) use the same structural engineering firm (single point of failure).

In some ways skinny buildings take less wind loading than broader tall buildings. Walk into the wind with a pole then do the same with a sheet of plywood ! Surrounding structures and open areas like Central Park will vary/swirl wind loading so only direct strong storm cells would bear heavily on a structure. I am no engineer or weather expert...some things just make sense ?

That's actually one of the reasons why I love the Shard in London. It reminds me so much of the description of cities in the science-fiction stories I read as a kid: soaring buildings made of glass reaching up into the sky.

They could also become the start of hive cities from 2000AD and Warhammer 40K but I try not to think of that

This is the building I'm most excited for but checking in every day feels like no progress is being made! I need to somehow force myself to not come onto this page for at least 6 months and then be pleasantly surprised...Of course that would be impossible for me!

For those thinking about the structural safety of these tall buildings, this article may be of interest:

How to Keep a 1,500-Foot Skyscraper From Falling Over

http://www.wired.com/2015/07/keep-15...raper-falling/

Edit - Having read the article in full (only read the intro before posting and assumed the article was longer than it was), it may not be as interesting or informative as I had hoped. Happy to delete this post if it doesn't contribute anything to the conversation. Sorry.

Ah, so the core is offset from the pit in this building. Is that due to the cantilever?

Yes, as well as the tower is on the east side of the plot whereas the retail portion (Nordstrom) will take the whole footprint of the building.

I didn't realize the core was that far along. Looks like it will be a race with 220 CPS!
