Fascinating! This is already above street level, the tallest in the city yet, and we still don't know just how tall! I wonder when Extell will actually post the official renders and height on their website:

Kind of crazy they are using three cranes in such a small plot.

All the 57th street towers as of now are a given (although there are still a few projects there that aren't ready yet to start construction)

But for me the excited part is, not only will this tower be rising well above the midtown skyline but 111 W57, 220 CPS, 53W53 and 520 Park will be rising together more or less simultaneously in that general area (if I didn't leave any out). I think then, with all those billionaire towers going up at the same time, people will truly feel the impact of this construction boom.

432 Park really threw a lot of people off (considering the majority of New Yorkers and visitors in general are not as in tuned to all these projects and developments as we are on these forums) so to see even more towers of even greater height being constructed will be mind-blowing and overwhelming considering the towers on 57th street are just scratching the surface in the grand scheme of things.

Wow, I was just thinking about how slow this tower is coming along, and now the core is above street level!?!? I guess it took 12 minutes to do all the underground work. I could have sworn this was still a hole 3 days ago.

No spire

Quote:
Finally, we have another image from a tipster that may or may not be accurate. It depicts the Nordstrom Tower’s Smith + Gill design, but with a parapet at 1,550′ above street level, and no spire. Given that a spire has apparently been an integral part of the design process until this point, we think the plans may be outdated, but the source states the diagram is recent.

The proposals by Foster and Rogers were HORRIBLE, hacky, plodding mediocrities. Regardless of the shortcomings of the design by Smith and Gill, it was clearly the best of the three. By far.

Hard to know what to make of that. I tend to agree with YIMBY's hunch that it's likely a holdover from an earlier diagram, or at the very least that Gary is screwing with the competition via DOB filings. We really aren't likely to know what's coming until construction reaches that point. Here's hoping for that 1550' parapet though.

Also from that YIMBY article, here are a couple of the other designs submitted by competing firms to Extell.

Norman Foster:

Richard Rogers:

I wish there was a better view of the Foster tower because it looks mighty imposing. But I have to say, of the three designs, the current Smith + Gill tower is my favorite.

And as a bonus, a render (or at least a Photoshop of 432 Park's press materials) of the 57th Street skyline with 111 and CP Tower included:

Would not at all be surprised if the spire was removed but roof height is more important.

It's just unnecessary money, and if it's not even going to be higher than 1WTC there's no point. (No pun intended, I swear)

I hope 1550 to roof is true, I'd be happy with just that.

Agree'd, and that particular "spire" is just nasty looking. It adds nothing to the building.

If there's no spire it'll be just like 3WTC all over again... And Ping An IFC... And Federation Tower....Sigh...maybe the spire trend is going backward because developers think that it's wasting money? I really hope that the diagram is inaccurate.

I also like Richard Rogers' design a bit, except for the yellow cladding. Who wants another Beaver House?

The Norman Foster design is just meh, like 1 Vanderbilt Place lost its soul. The "three prongs" also sounds very familiar (hint, hint, 425 Park Avenue). Norman Foster has designed much better towers for New York (hint, hint, the old design for 2WTC).

I really like the Rodgers design, like it better than the current one actually.

As far as the possibility of the tower losing its spire, I actually hope it's true, I would take a solid 1550 footer over and 1520 footer with a toothpick on top pretending to be 1800 feet.

Developer: Nordstrom Tower design still up in the air

Quote:
Three tower cranes hover like birds of prey over the site of Extell’s planned, 1,500-plus-foot-tall Nordstrom Tower at 217 W. 57th St., home to the department store and super-luxury condos.
(The crane at right is for Vornado’s 220 Central Park So.)
But despite reports of a hoped-for, record $4.4 billion apartment sellout, Gary Barnett’s Extell Development still doesn’t seem to know what it’s building.
A rep said all renderings previously shown, such as the one shown in the inset, were wrong, and no final image is available.
Completion, once expected in 2018, now “should be” in 2019.
