You guys are arguing about a twelve-inch dick versus an eleven-inch dick.

I'm dying to see with the removal of the spire Are Chicagoans going to protest that the Sears Tower is taller than Nordstrom by pinnacle ?and make themselves look like hypocrites !

It looked great with the spire, but i really like it without as well. I'm also loving the 1,550 roof height! At the same time it kind of saddens me that there are buildings that are coming close to, or are surpassing One World Trade Center's roof height, and the Sears Tower. Its kind of a bittersweet feeling! I'm really looking forward to seeing this building rise though. One of my favorite projects going on right now for sure.

Pretty sure most the majority of Chicagoans or advocates for the Sears Tower have always labeled Sears by its roof height. The tip will be taller, but not architecturally.

Also, the loss of the spire to me is not a massive let down. I think the building looks pretty good on it's own. Flat roof buildings can generally go without a spire and still have an aesthetically pleasing quality to them. Buildings that require a spire that come to mind are 1 WTC, ESB, Two Prudential Plaza, as all of these have tapering effects that lead up to a single, encapsulating point. This will look good with or without.

This looks just fine without the spire because it has the setback near the top (where the Cantilever ends) and because of the long vertical lines at the very top that emphasize verticality while also making for a stylish modern crown of sorts

I just Hope 1 WTC doesn't become the Washington Monument Version here in New York that you can't build taller !

Meh. I much prefer it with the spire. It adds a futuristic character to it, and compliments the tower's slender build.

No, because it wasn't designed with a spire in mind, just what you got, a very slender rectangular parallelepiped, divided in many sections by the "drums"

111 W57th was not designed with a spire in mind either, it has a crown. The same with 53W53th (Verre)

But the massing of this building was designed with a spire in mind, it has a slender shape with a series of asymmetrical, small setbacks that culminates in the off-centre spire, which also has setbacks of its own. The spire reinforces the condition of pinnacle of the building and gives it its particular identity, just as 1WTC spire does. You may say 1WTC spire is a cheater, that it was cheapened out by losing the radome (it was) but it is a formal element that gives the building its identity as a pinnacle in the Lower Manhattan Skyline, In that case with the symmetrical tappering faces culminating in a centered spire.

This pictures illustrate it very well, the building progressivelly loses corporiety to the top including the crown that becomes more transparent, that would be complimented by the spire, which also loses corporiety, until it dissapears in the sky.
I hope they don't get rid of the spire after all.

When the massing (ahem... actual) design was released for this building, many of us were disappointed with what had been touted to be a groundbreaking building for New York. Most people's response was something along the lines of, "Oh well, at least it will be tall."

So spire or no spire, the design of this building is still far from the best of the new ones cropping up along 57th Street and elsewhere throughout the city.

At least it will be tall.

I really wouldn't miss the spire if they did just a little bit more to articulate the crown. Maybe something (pardoning the total hatchet job) along these lines:
