Quote:
“This will be the world’s tallest residential building,” says Herrick of the 1,550-footer, which is set to be completed by 2018. “There is a variance in zoning on 57th Street that allows single-parcel developers to build very large skyscrapers. It’s a loophole where you can acquire 15-story buildings that can be readjusted to 90-story ones. Crazy.”
Quote:
“The exciting time is when we bring them together to ask, ‘How are they all going to impact the skyline?’ Not all of these will stand the test of time. Some will become the next Chrysler Building, but some will just be glass boxes."

....many "glass boxes" are pure masterpieces!:Lever House,Seagram,U.N. building or more recently Baccarat building.
For me,"glass boxes" are the triumph of reason over pride;more important than childish architectural gimmicks is the quality of the materials.

That link says what the skyline will look like in 2035... most of it will be complete by 2020, that image is 2025 max

But looks fantastic! Makes the main chunk of midtown look small!

The only tower shown that's still iffy is 15 Penn but then again, it would most likely be done before 2025 if they do ultimately intend to demolish Hotel Penn within the next few years.

With all due respect, they are all, "iffy" until built. Large scale construction projects of this magnitude have an ~50% chance of ever being completed. Yes, if the economy stays good and income inequality stays high these towers will all be built. But if the economy tanks or new laws come into play that discourage such lavish expenditures they will be canceled in droves. People were saying the same sort of things before the last market crash and then it all went to hell.

True except for the fact that most of the towers are already financed and under construction. All of the 57th street tower are financed and currently under construction except for 1Park Lane.

1 Vanderbilt hasn't started construction yet but it's got a tenant on hand and approval from the city, and obviously demo has started on the current building so there's very little chance of it being derailed.

The original 4 HY towers are all under construction along with 55 HY as well as 1 and 3 Manhattan West.
So the only projects that could be affected by an economic downturn is the second half of HY as well a 2Manhattan West and the Girasol. So it's fair to say that the worst case scenario is that 70-80% of the towers shown will be built by 2020, and it wouldn't be a big loss cause all the major towers and the largest ones are already accounted for.

Besides this graphic also doesn't include proposals like Silverstein's tower, the Hudson Spire, Shop's tower or 50 HY, so there are more towers to be added... If the economy cooperates.

All of these new buildings going up are literally redefining the Manhattan plateau, raising it to new heights! And I hear there is talk about a new supertall next door to One Vanderbilt that will be even taller than that!

I love the new heights in that picture above, but I'm not sure I'm going to love all that glass.

I'm definitely not a fan of all the glass. I appreciate being able to see the different floors on the buildings as opposed to it looking like one large shiny object. Having the individual windows stand out (a la older buildings) gives skyscrapers a sense of scale and makes them actually look bigger than all-glass buildings.

Nonetheless, they will be tall.

Maybe some shop drawings to show the procedure will be done according to safety requirements

Maybe they started some risky activity without submitting details or without the approval

Happens every day in NYC construction, even at the highest level. It's happened at the WTC many times. These guys just had an unlucky inspection visit.

According to the NYC DOB website a piece of steel fell from the site. No damage or injuries resulted but that is the source of the issue.

Unrelated -- we haven't seen any renders of what the Nordstrom store will look like from the 58th Street side, have we? One has to imagine standing between this tower and 220 CPS will be breathtaking, but I realized we don't actually know what that will feel like at street level.

This shot from New York YIMBY helps illustrate where I'm talking about.
