I agree. This buildling will look absurd and totally out of place. It will make everything around it look small as [email protected]

But you have to start some where so I say go for it

Can't wait until about 30 years from now when the TWC gets torn down to build a 2,000 footer

Edit: It's hard to wrap my head around something more than twice as tall as the Time Warner Center here. And it's residential!!! The ludicrous height aside, I really hope Herzog comes up with a nice design.

Girasole.

I also think given that Nordstrom has signed on to basically anchor this tower from a retail perspective, means that this should move forward relatively quickly. I can't imagine they would sign on to occupy the retail aspect of this tower without the utmost confidence that this will start construction, and thus finish sooner rather than later.

It's amazing that 1 WTC took the crown as NY's tallest just a few months ago, 432 Park will overtake 1 WTC shortly, and then not long after that this will take the crown, as it stands now. Amazing times in NY.

Expect to see curves, the architects designing this like curves in their buildings.

I just don't hope that if they make a spire it will be just over 500m with a roof height at 480+, like Taipei 101. I'd rather have a crown or something on top than.

1. Read the previous page. 1,550' is the height to the highest occupied floor. The DOB doesn't count spires / antennas / crowns etc.
2. The low floor count is probably due to Nordstrom store taking about 300k sf of retail space in the lower section of the tower.
3. 432 Park is 426m to the roof and has only 89 floors.
4. Nowadays floor count doen's mean sh*t. I've seen them all, 300m towers with 100 floors and 500m tall ones with 70 floors.

i spire like taipei 101 i would be fine with, that one is at least quite massive, i am afraid they just put a random spire on top like 1WTC just to reach that 1550ft height they claim.

edit: thanks for clearing up

Read carefully: The NYC Department of Buildings only counts height up to the highest occupied floor. Therefore the height listed on the DOB website is what the highest floor will be, not the top of a spire.

Edit: looks like hunser said the same thing I did.

If there were a crown or spire, it would not be included in the 1,550 foot figure in the DOB permit.

Possibly, but it will still be 1550 ft. to roof.

NYC Department of Buildings only measures to the roof. So this building will be minimum 1550 ft. if it's a box. If there's any sort of non-box roof, it will be substantially higher.

A major spire/crown, and this building will be 1,800 ft. or taller.

The 88 floors are due to the fact that the first 8 or so floors are extremely tall department store floors (Nordstrom is building its global flagship here), so this building will probably be 250 ft.-300 ft. tall by Floor 8.

And the condo floors will likely have very tall ceiling heights. 432 Park has even higher ceiling heights.

Let's hope its spire, if it has one, truly is integrated into the design. I am liking these non-spire towers going up recently. New York is on a roll!

Only in NY can there be news of two superstalls in one day in the midst of a world-wide recession: this and 51 W 42nd.

I couldn't agree more. New York needs balance. I would love for something of this height to have a spire. As long as the architect can use a spire to compliment the tower as opposed to trying to add height. 1WTC is going to be the tallest building in the city upon completion. It's hard to grasp how short lived that will be with all the skyscrapers under construction or proposed in New York!

Yes, Midtown is preparing to be arguably the best skyline on the planet. I like the current Midtown much more than in any other decade, but I think the Financial District looked best in the 1930s. (Sorry WTC!)

Oops, I thought this was the 51 E42 Street thread

They should just build a 400m version of Beaver House to troll One57

Oh, the tourists remarking at One57's mass from Sheep's Meadow will be in for a treat with this one!
