Just remember the story of 1WTC where the company that was building the tower decided to save 25 million $ on a special cladding of the antenna. And this is the most iconic building in NYC with all that associated with the memorial, 9.11 and etc.

So if they were trying to save on 1 WTC we can be sure they will try to do the same here. Though there is no question that the tower with the spire looks way better!
I'm not sure, but if I were Barnett, despite the extra cost, I would love to have the tallest building in the city and outside of Asia. It already is where it counts (roof) but officially would be nice too.

Its a shame that something this tall looks so...boring. This is easily the worst design of any of the super towers going up near the park. Even 432 Park has a more interesting design. At least pretty much all of the other super towers near the park that are currently under construction have solid aesthetics.

It has some tough competition. The only interesting things about this tower are the height (at least for NYC) and the cantilever. Plus they really should cover the area below the cantilever with glass. It looks uninviting.

That model shows how the spire isn´t just some pole put ontop of the building but a vital and defining, well integrated element of the design itself. The spire is also important to visually stretch the tower and make it´s mark on the skyline more imposing than a flat roof could. I think it would be stupid to build the tower without it.

Or how about, the Arts Students League below uses the blank wall of the tower as canvas for a huge mural.

New renderings on Extell's site. Not a fan of the tower, but love how massive this thing is gonna be.

I think it looks just fine without the spire. It's going to be an impressive tower when done.

More importantly it will finally make the skyline reach for almost solid 500m of a building.

But...but you've said that modern architecture, especially glass boxes are not only boring and uninspiring, but even ¡cruel!
