It's funny, I was just in Sheep's Meadow today with a bunch of friends and someone pointed out and inquired about 220 CPS, saying it was totally dominating. I told them that they were condos, and they commented that they liked that it was classical-style building. I then proceeded to tell them that the building U/C behind 220 CPS (which they didn't even notice at first because it blends in with 220 CPS from that angle, also U/C) is gonna be taller than 1WTC and the tallest building in NY (by roof height) and their jaws basically dropped. I then pointed out super skinny 111 W57th street, and told them that that will also end up being taller than 1WTC. And they were amazed. I then commented on how funny it was that practically no one in NY is aware of it, and they chuckled. The conversation then drifted to the craziness happening at Hudson Yards.

It was great seeing their amazement, especially at "mere" 220CPS.

Honestly, it is so frustrating to follow these towers during the early phases of construction. It isn't satisfying for me until they start to overcome their neighbors and become visible from multiple vantage points.

Non skyscraper people are really going to start to freak out around Christmas time when these buildings are really starting to dominate and grow farther still.

That's funny... conversations like that are commonplace to people like us. I've had friends who started to talk about some tall building and then turn to look at me and say something like, "Before I go on, why don't you just tell us all about it? How tall is it? How many floors? What year was it built?..."

A couple of times I've been on various observation decks and answered tourist's questions about NYC skyscrapers. One was wondering what was up with the round, pointy topped tanks on many building roofs, so I explained that they were water towers. She was happy with that. I heard another couple wondering about 432 Park Avenue, curious about whether it was going to get any taller. I told them that it was all topped out, they just had to remove the crane and construction scaffolds/netting.

Even non skyscraper geeks get curious sometimes, and it's pretty cool when we can help them out.

I experienced exactly the same on my visit to NYC last year haha, i clarified some doubts on top of the rock to some random spanish speaking tourists, the friends I travelled with were freaking out about the amount of information i knew about NYC skyscrapers, I guess it's even weirder in my case bc of living 6000 km away from the city.

I recall how on my first walk through midtown in my life, i walked through various streets and everywhere towers randomly popped up. And i just couldnīt believe how packed the city is with towers. Allthough i knew midtown it is dense.

My favorite is looking down any random avenue in Midtown and seeing a Lower Manhattan skyscraper way off in the distance down the avenue.
