432 in the back, so simple in design, yet so elegant and beautiful.

The thing that makes it is that the windows are so starkly different in color from the white concrete. If they were the same color it would be just any other tall box. The wind breaks do nothing for me aesthetically. I'd actually like it better if they weren't there... they break the effect of the "countless" layers of windows.

I will never understand 432 park avenue. These are the first kind of building drawings you do in middle school.

Interestingly, if everything in Manhattan was concrete Tetris-style it'd look worse than if everything was bland glass box but if you add one concrete Tetris-style it makes the skyline look better.

You could not be more wrong.
And by that I mean wrong about the drawing part, otherwise - indeed, you probably will not ever understand 432 Park Avenue.

Happy New Year!

This thread looks like it’s the place to talk about the nyc skyline a lot like the 432 thread was in it’s day. So here’s my view (from my window).

First the skyline view of mid-town ny looking south certainly the finest in the world. I always thought that the two best were Tsim Sha Tsui looking across to Central and the mid-town ny view. The recent additions have put ny in in a class by itself and don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Other thing is the grouping west of Fifth Ave and 432 on the east. the blob to the west is very majestic and contains outstanding buildings. 432 to the east stands alone in it’s own space and is monumental. So, my vote goes to 432.

I was just trying to find something positive to say about it. It wasn't easy.

But the windows are the best part to me... they give it sense of scale. CPT will have a slightly better design but it will be all blue glass. Yeah, more blue glass buildings.

I guess its true when they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I cant believe you put CPT even in the same category as the 432 for comparison .

For me the real beauty of 432 is it´s simplicity and that it doesnt try too hard to stand out. I also like those open floors, that set a trend in the city. Hints at Steinway and the Meganon supertall. For me the real beauty of 432 comes out, when i am totally calm, relaxed and just gaze at it and let my emotions admire the minimalistic lines and the simple shapes and proportions.

I like them both because they are tall... that's pretty much it. They're in the midst of Steinway, 220 CPS and Verre, which are all far superior buildings.

I don't think it ruins it. I think it adds to it. It certainly is amazing to look up at it from a sheer height/skinniness perspective. But one is enough.

Could you be more pompous ?

I think it's an unimaginative eyesore as well.

I think a lot of the hate 432 gets is because it was the first one up on the 57th street corridor. It opens itself up to more criticism than usual because whether you like it or not, it breaks the plateau from many vantage points. If 432 were among the last towers to go up (say after Steinway and CPT), I don't think people would be as vocal about their disdain for it.

I'm convinced the hate will die down in a few years after the rest of the buildings fill in on the 57th street corridor. The Twins were widely criticized for their obnoxious size and boring box like appearance when they were first built. After some context was built around it, they slowly were more appreciated and loved.

At any rate, given the sheer height of the building, it is great to use for way finding in the city (much like the ESB and WTC 1).

Anyway, back on topic, I don't think the spire is coming back to CPT. But after the new renderings, I think that is quite OK. It looks fine without it.
