Gary Barnett, one of New York's leading developers, is planning a new Midtown skyscraper that could rise 300 feet higher than the Empire State Building, and he's has hired the architect who designed the world's tallest tower.

Mr. Barnett said in an interview that his Extell Development Co. has tapped Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture LLP to design an apartment tower atop the city's first Nordstrom Inc. JWN +0.10%department store.

.
Mr. Smith was the lead designer on the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai when he worked for Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP. He and partner Gordon Gill left Skidmore to start their own firm in 2006.

The firm "is very expert in this field, and we want to do a really high-quality, great building," Mr. Barnett said....

Interesting... no wacky buildings then (HdeM). Still, this should be fun to watch. He has done beautiful towers that are contexutal (Burj, Jin Mao) and he has the Kingdom Tower design which is super modern. He was involved in some ugly SOM towers like the GM tower in Detroit and Canary Wharf. One thing we know, we are not getting any crazy organic or highly innovative out of the box tower which is fine with me. He likes stainless steel facades it appears. I wonder will he inject a NY flavor into the tower just like he did with Jin Mao for China or Burj for Dubai..

Of course we won't get an over the top design. That belongs not to NYC. The architect would know what he is doing.

No lack of ambition anyway. This will be a great tower.

. I don't agree with your 'belong not to NYC'... over the top design is just what the doctor ordered IMO.

I don't mean boring, but sometimes an architect tries too hard to make a tower stand out and fails. Nobody wants that to happen here. But as I said, they know what they are doing and i'm sure this won't be a boring tower.

This architect is absolutely fantastic and one of the main reasons SOM is still such a success. There's no doubt in my mind he'll do a fine, fine job.

Completely agree, the Sears Tower is incredible. There really is nothing else like it. The design, is amazing, but with the black facade on top of that, it's gorgeous.

Someone at SSP already claimed it would have blue sapphire cladding. A link was posted to that URL a few pages back.

I wouldn't expect anything different than the colourless glass that reflects nothing but blue sky, like they have at the WTC and 157.
Although black glass is probably my favourite colour for skyscrapers, I don't think many people would like living with smoked-glass windows. Especially billionaires with high standards. Transparent glass is the most practical type.
What's sapphire-blue cladding? I hope that's not literally tinted-blue glass

I really like the idea of a dark or even black facade. Though i don't think the chances are very high.

There are some real great black towers in NY, like the Trump world tower.

Black cladding is my favourite cladding. If it didn't ruin the views from the Trump World Tower I doubt it would ruin the views from this building.

That's what's on SWFC. Even better in my opinion.
