February 2013
Barnett’s big buildout
While Gary Barnett has been making waves for a while (and setting records recently), he’s now working on more Manhattan projects than any other developer
February 01, 2013
By Adam Pincus

Gary Barnett
Ask most people in the industry today and they’ll tell you Gary Barnett is the most aggressive of the large real estate developers in Manhattan. His appetite for risk among his peers is second to none....

However, there are at least 11 projects with a total of nearly 6 million square feet that he’s currently working on in New York City, including his “other” 57th Street project : a 1,550-foot- tower at 225 West 57th Street, between Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Barnett filed plans with the city’s Department of Buildings in November 2012 that call for 233 residential units at the 1.2 million-square-foot structure. The building will also include the city’s first Nordstrom at its base.....

I first want to see a design before I can decide if I can't wait to see it rise. So I can't wait to see the design but that's no news... #takeslong

If this was to have a square floor plan bottom-to-top like 432 Park, it'd have sides of nearly 117 feet vs. 432 Park at 93.5 feet. Also, this will have an average of 13,636 square feet per floor vs. 8,742 at 432 Park, so it won't be terribly thin.

Nah.. I prefer something that looks less rocket-like.

Something that slowly tapers up from a base without obvious setbacks. Other than that, I'm fine.

I hope for a design what you will immediately connect to this tower. But absolutely no over the top design.

I agree. Either of the two posts above would be wonderful. I'd like a design similar to 2IFC or SWFC, but something a little more complex, maybe deconstructivist, wouldn't bother me at all.

I always imagine this design will be triangular shaped like Greenland Wuhan Tower or Kingdom Tower. Both are AS+GG designs which is the designer of this project. I guess we'll have to wait and see who is right. This is probably the most anticipated designs in SSC history!

Imo a 500m tall Shanghai Tower - like tower would look extremely bad in New York's muscular skyline. A Ping An (won't happen) or a Guangzhou CTF would look good.

That's the most likely scenario.

Shame on me but I had too google it. It's a very beautiful tower, reminds me of the GE Building. And boy talk about that night lighting scheme.

This tower will have completely different dimensions than the Minneapolis tower, but I want to see that brand of post-modernism adapted for at least one trophy supertall in Manhattan.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll get something completey different.
