The U.S. can build 100 2000 footers if they wanted to. They have the economy, money, resources and technology. Still, we don't see any megatall in the U.S. under construction. Why? Because there's no demand for that, not even in New York City. If a tower doesn't pay out, i.e. doesn't make sense economically (well hardly any megatall does lol), then it simply won't be built. Let the others have their trophy towers, paid and / or subsidized by the state.

I think it's fascinating that such a tall tower is:
- economically feasible, i.e. people are going to pay big $$$ to live there. This means the tower will be (fully) occupied.
- a residential tower for crying out loud! It's not an office trophy tower paid by the city / state.
- located in a super dense area (probably the densest piece of land where a superskyscraper is going to be built - EVER).
- being built on demand.

The country doesn't even have the ability to maintain its aging infrastructure.

If there is one city in the world that doesn't need a megatall to show how powerful it is, it is New York City.

We'll get a somewhat clear idea of the shape when the plans on file with the DOB have been approved.

Again, it would not look good being that tall. It would take many years of super tall development to accommodate for such an awesome height.

Won't happen. That was the tallest building ever really proposed for New York.

Agree, midtown needs several 400-500m towers before a megatall would fit in the skyline.

I agree, and fortunately Midtown will get some. Other cities could learn a thing or two from New York. Except for Shanghai I don't see a megatall fit anywhere. I mean who's got several 400m+ and 500m+ towers clustered together?

Shenzhen may have in the near future, but there are not many others.

Shenzhen hasn't big clusters, maybe one around the Convention and Exhibition Centre. But most skscrapers are spread out.

According to "crainsnewyork.com"
"Excavation on the site's 40,000-square-foot footprint could begin by the first quarter of 2013."
This 40,000 sq foot footprint is as big as One WTC's footprint.
So the sides gotta be 200'X200' and if the plot is T-shaped, the sides will be larger yet...
I would be glad if you cited that figure with references..
Anyway, i think the sides will be by far larger than 117'
