An evening walk with the misses around Søerne ( "the lakes" )

These old defenses turned recreational area is what seperates the "Inner City District" from the districts of Østerbro, Nørrebro and Frederiksberg

They date back nearly 500 years where - after a failed seige on Copenhagen - the natural lakes in the area were converted and excavated to form another line of defense.. they were also used as emergency water surply for Copenhagen for some time, but the water that originates from the Utterslev Mose area in the Nordvest District ( large swampland connected to the lakes by rivers running under the city ) is very neutrient rich and algee have been a problem for centuries.. so not the best source of drinking water.

Anyways today they are an excelent place for a calm walk or jog, especially since the northern side is right up to the buildings so there is no car noise other than that from the bridges and other side of the lakes..

We start off at the Tycho Brahe Planetarium in Downtown..

^thanks guys!

Let's visit Tivoli Gardens - the world's second oldest amusement park..

When I toook these I was there to celebrate my gf's birthday, so I didn't cover it as extensively as I would have if I was after shots for this thread, but I might as well share some of the pics I took..

The place used to be part of the former defenses ( the lakes there now used to be moats ) - but it was later made ito a park and with more and more rides in eventually turned into what it is today..
While there are fun rides most people go there for the atmosphere and the concerts - I would consider it a "must see" place if visiting, especially in the evening when all the lights are turned on and the kids are gone..

Despite it's very central location ( smack in downtown ) you can still feel vert far away in there despite the city is just on the other side of the fence..

What a fantastic thread. I'll have to spend more time looking at the pictures in detail; but Copenhagen has excited my curiosity recently and is on my list of 'to visit' cities.

Your pictures show it to be the ideal city: human in scale, civilised, great waterways and boats, lots of colour, green spaces, charming old buildings, great shopping & restaurants etc.

I love the residential areas lining the canals.

Please keep posting.

Time to visit Zoo Tower - the wooden tower that over the years have become a landmark and symbol of Copenhagen Zoo..

At 44m it's not a very tall tower, but it's location on a hill means that it gives a pretty neat 360 degree view over the city..

Time to test my camera's zoom abilities..

Øresund Bridge to Sweden

Downtown

Domus Vista - tallest residential tower in the Kingdom and b*tt-ugly to say the least!

Bellahøj Hill..

TDC TV tower..

Fredriksberg City Hall and Falconer Hotel

The yellow 'Frederiksberg Castle' ( 1699 ) was originally home of King Frederik 4 but now it's the Army's Officer School

Downtown again..

Stay tuned for more pics..

Copenhagen demonstrates that there is much to be said for low-rise cities. It looks very liveable.

I second that, and it seems to live up to the principles of new urbanism.

I have read about the Carlsberg brewery redevelopment which is adhering to new urbanism and am wondering how that is taking shape? So FREKI if you can, fill us in mate.
