We've hosted Pan American Games and Confederations Cup. No problems in our toilets, rooms or water.

Generally there are no problems with water in Russia. Usually it's clean and drinkable (though from the soviet times many people have a habit of boiling it in a kettle before drinking). But in most places you can drink it straight out of the faucet (exceptions exist, but quite rare and usually in smaller provincial towns).

But in these hotels everything is new and, I guess, the pipes are new, the water distribution system is new and not cleaned properly yet... The water in the photos looks like it's collected quite a good amount of rust in the pipes.

Sometimes I wonder why cities really want to host the olympics.

For years leading up to the event the stories are almost universally about how far behind the city is in building the venues, how they are mistreating the locals to prepare for the games, how bad the crime and security in the city is, how much the cost overruns are, and other tales of woe, bad weather, mismanagement. Then there's 2 weeks of TV coverage where the host city is only obliquely referenced - because after all it's about the sports, not ohing and ahing over infrastructure. Then everyone goes home and shortly after the stories about the decaying, unused white elephants begin.

London was going to be a disaster. Vancouver was going to be a disaster. Now Sochi is a "disaster". Who cares how many hotel room doors don't have doorknobs? Is it really worth it?

And I had never seen such note in any hotels in Russia that I visited. But as you can see it can happen.

So it can happen in other countries as well - over the last decade I had seen such notes in several European countries. Don't remember where exactly, but just last year - in France certainly.

Some Russian athletes and reporters told that they experienced similar problems at Torino Olympics as well. I guess you know it better than participants (sarcasm). The only difference that Western and Russian mass-media had no desire to extrapolated or exaggerate it.

Also, don't forget that Alpine resorts have long history and necessary infrastructure for hosting events. There was no necessary for large-scale reconstruction for hosting Olympics.

Torino did/has it's problems.

They built a very costly sliding center, turned white elephant because they could not maintain it nor have the resources to hold the annual championships in Bobsled, Luge and Skeleton. Italy already had a sliding track in Cortina d'Ampezzo, but that too shut down.

Blame the $51 billion spent on Sochi on corruption, when it was only supposed to cost $13 billion. Even with that figure one summarize that half went embezzled away, so the real cost overall would have been probably $25 billion to $30 billion.
