More great photos by SSC members Ingenioren, muster and marshol from the (currently U/C) Barcode area.
Nice to have updates from this essential part of Oslo city development. On one of these photos you can see that they have started to remove the highway/motorway that has cut through the area for many, many decades. (Photo copyright Ingenioren, muster and marshol @ SSC) |

Thanks for comment. It's not surprising. I won't claim Oslo is the most beautiful city in the world exactly, but it has a bit of a special atmosphere in my opinion, that you will maybe not discover, and like/enjoy, until you've lived here for many years. Therefore, Oslo is not really a typical tourist destination to be totally honest, as much as a good and interesting place to live. It's the urban centre of Norway and it provides a certain "rough/tough" city feeling that no other city in Norway, and maybe even Scandinavia, can match. Stockholm and Copenhagen try almost too hard to be "nice, beautiful" and Oslo maybe isn't that a lot of places in town, but Oslo does have an edge, a feeling that maybe can be compared to f.ex. Rotterdam or Hamburg (not in the size ofc, but the *feeling*). That urban feeling is contrasted by Oslo's intimate contact with nature - both huge forested and hilly areas, and the sea/fjord. Not *extremely* beautiful all the time, but you need to get to know Oslo on a sort of "deep" level to really appreciate it fully. (Also, good knowledge of Oslo history helps a lot to make you understand and appreciate it) Last edited by dexter26; November 5th, 2010 at 04:37 PM. |

Okay, yes you are right about one thing - some areas in Oslo is "gray" (especially in fall/winter times). That is true.
I'm not the type of person to lie or paint things more beautiful than they really are. But excuse me, you don't think other cities have "gray" or "boring" areas? Ever been to New York, there's thousands of extremely "gray" buildings there, does it mean the city is bad in all different ways? No. Example of such NY buildings: New York Marriott East Side ![]() Btw I must say I've visited more "gray" areas in several other European cities than you will ever find in Oslo... It's not that I'm angry or anything (seriously, i'm more grown up than that), it's good that people say their opinion. But now I still feel like I have to prove you wrong, just for fun ![]() Here's some photos to try to change your mind (These ones are from reseguiden.se a Swedish site) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A Swedish dude visiting Oslo during the Eurovision song contest, looks like he's satisfied at least ![]()

I, personally, don't think that Oslo is grey at all. There are many clean and modern spaces.

manba - I'm not the creator of the pics in this thread (except 2 photos of mine I've posted). They're from all over the web (and whenever I know who created the photos, I have usually included copyright notice)... I guess those pictures were taken in summer, maybe early summer. Today's photo A photo of Akershus fortress(wiki) in winter, showing the "blue and green" profile of Oslo. (Photo copyright Cola21) image hosted on flickr ![]() The tall hill in the background is about 8 km in the distance from the fortress itself and the Oslo waterfront. Bringing you another
7 original Oslo photos Six are from Ingenioren (SSC poster) in The Tjuvholmen thread and the last photo is shot by me, originally from the thread Oslo photos by dexter26. The six photos by Ingenioren features the new central seaside development "Tjuvholmen" ("Thief's Islet") which is located right next to Aker Brygge (our first seaside city development and very popular in summer especially). Tjuvholmen is turning out to be a quite nice, dense and urban development combining urbanism with close contact with the Oslo fjord. (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() Two photos of the model of this new city development: First one shows the coming art center/museum designed by Renzo Piano in the foreground (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() Second photo shows a considerable part of the project which is already completed & built (Photo copyright Ingenioren @ SSC) ![]() Now it's time for my own photo, this one is of the only historical/preserved Jewish graveyard in Oslo, in the district Grünerlřkka. A aerial photo of the north-eastern part of Oslo known as Grorud valley.
It is a halfway suburb and halfway "project" area (with that I just mean all the commie-like apartment buildings there), where the valley bottom has quite a lot of industry/warehouses, transport, roads, offices etc. while most of the living areas are towards the hillsides on each side. (Photo copyright Chell Hill @ Wikimedia Commons) ![]() This valley is today known for a quite high percentage of immigrants and some areas have some issues like poverty and crime/drugs. It's not exactly like the problem areas in Paris or London ( ) but in Norwegian terms some see it as a hellhole . (Though in this picture it looks extremely green and not really so dense, the experience is different on ground level - this seems to be a quite high aerial photo) For those interested, here's some basic facts about this valley: - Between 165 000 and 170 000 inhabitants - 38,5% non-western immigrants, and immigrants from more than 170 countries. In some smaller areas, there's more than 50% immigrants. - More than 60 000 jobs - 4 of Oslo's 15 boroughs - One of Norway's most important highways run through the valley, and that's also the highway to Oslo's main airport - Between 1960 and 1990 the population in this area grew 70% Last edited by dexter26; November 23rd, 2010 at 06:48 AM. |
