DESMET Ballestra, a Belgian process engineer, is collaborating with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to find competitive and energy-efficient ways to produce specialty fats.

"We'll be carrying out joint research with UPM to optimise the process of churning a variety of specialty fats," said Desmet Ballestra (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Khoo Kiak Kern.

"We've been doing research work with universities in Europe and the US. For palm-based specialty fats, we want to work with a local university," he said.

"As the global demand for specialty fats to make chocolate, ice cream, cake icing and vegan cheese increases, our clients would be keen on processes that heighten the quality of the food ingredients at more competitive rates," he said.

"We'll be supplying the parts for the pilot plant to UPM's Engineering Faculty soon. It will initially be able to fractionate 200kg of palm oil per trial," he told Business Times at the signing of a memorandum of understanding with UPM to optimise production and expand the variety of specialty fats from palm oil.

UPM vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah said the partnership with Desmet is in line with the government's new economic model that seeks to upgrade human capital and meet the needs of a knowledge-based economy.

"It is also important for Malaysia to invest more and stay in the forefront of palm oil nutrition. With closer working relations between the public and private sector, we can optimise our resources to arrive at definitive findings," he said.

"This initiative with Desmet Ballestra will give a better practical exposure to 100 engineering students at our university," he added.

Also present were UPM associate professor Dr Chin Nyuk Ling and lecturer Dr Mohd Noriznan Mokhtar.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) aims to be recognised as one of the world's top 100 universities by 2015, said its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon.

He said this was spurred by its achievement as the 42nd best university in Asia as well being ranked top local public institution of higher learning (IPTA).

"Of course, we are proud of our success in maintaining our position among local IPTAs but UM should not be satisfied by being merely a 'village champion'.

"Our mission is to become an internationally renowned university as it is where the big challenge lies for us," he said at the presentation of the UM Excellent Awards here Friday night.

The Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, who is also UM pro-chancellor graced the ceremony.

The Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, who is also UM chancellor was present.

At the ceremony, 15 awards were presented in recognition of outstanding achievements registered by UM lecturers.

Assoc Prof Dr Azhar M. Merican of the Department of Orthopaedics, Faculty of Medicine received RM31,000 for his outstanding effort.

The Xavier School community woke up early Sunday morning on the 14th of March 2010 to travel to the site of Xavier School Nuvali for the auspicious start of construction for the new campus. The school is situated in the heart of the Nuvali development, a joint development of Ayala Land and the Yulo family, located in the former Canlubang Estate in Calamba, Laguna.

The program began with an invocation given by Fr. Guy Guibelondo, SJ, campus minister and board trustee. The welcome address was given by Fr. Johnny Go, SJ, president, followed by a message from Ayala Land, delivered by Ms. Meean Dy, SVP for Strategic Planning.

Before the laying of the time capsule, Fr. Ismael Zuloaga, SJ (chairman of the board) read aloud his letter to the future students and graduates of Xavier School Nuvali. The original handwritten note was placed in the capsule, alongside other school memorabilia. After the blessing by Fr. Jose Cecilio Magadia, SJ (provincial superior), the Jesuits, together with Gov. Teresita Lazaro, Ms. Dy, and Jose Rafael Yulo, representing the Yulo family, lowered the time capsule.

After the capsule was buried, the group was joined by other guests for the ceremonial groundbreaking, including Amb. Bienvenido Tan, Jr., (chairman emeritus), Mr. Jun Bisnar (VP and Nuvali gen. manager), Arch. Bong Recio, Eng. Art Carlos pPresident of Constech), Eng. Melito Cruz (VP of Makati Dev. Corp.), Mr. Miguel Tan, trustee and fundraising committee member, and Mr. Art Dy, representing the working committee.

This was followed by the tree planting, symbolizing the community’s commitment to nurture future Xaverians in the Nuvali campus. It also represented the school’s thrust for the environment and the principle of sustainability. Planting the tree seedlings were Ms. Jane Cacacho (HS principal), Ms. Arlene Choo (GS OIC principal), Jeremy Cua (HS SC president), Percival Lao (GS SC president), Mr. Arnold Velasco (AAXS president), Mr. Lawrence Cobankiat (XSPA chair), and Fr. Art Borja ( board trustee and school chaplain), who planted a mango tree. The mango tree references the mango tree in the pre-development San Juan campus, under whose shade the founding Jesuit fathers envisioned and planned the present school.

The program ended with the singing of the school song and the release of doves by all alumni present, led by the Jesuit fathers. The dove release symbolizes the school’s collective prayer for future Nuvali Xaverians to go forth and lead and serve for the greater good wherever God may lead them in the fullness of their lives.

The release was greeted by a rousing lion and dragon dance. After the short program, the guests proceeded to the adjacent Treveia clubhouse for a lunch buffet hosted by Alveo Land, an ALI affiliate.

Xavier School Nuvali is set to open in June 2012. For inquires or more information, email xsnuvali@xs.edu.ph.

About 19,000 Utar students to have access to 4G service
Tuesday August 17, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...30&sec=central

ON A mission to bring 4G network to universities, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) recently to establish a 4G network at its campuses in Kampar, Setapak, Sungai Long, and Petaling Jaya.

This marks another milestone in the education partner programme (EPP) spearheaded by YTL Comms.

Utar president Professor Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik said the EPP would transform the way of life in their campuses.

“4G Mobile Internet will provide new levels of interactivity among students and faculty personnel,” he said adding that this partnership will enable about 19,000 Utar students to accesss both Intranet and Internet throughout the campus grounds.

Under the EPP, the students will enjoy high-speed, wireless broadband access at anytime and from anywhere within the campuses.

Every student will get converged data and voice services totalling 300 megabytes per user, per month for three years.

YTL Comms CEO Wing K Lee said it was crucial to give special considerations to university students.

“We will be working closely together to foster a new generation of progressive, tech- savvy and innovative students who are able to create a positive impact to the development of the nation,” he said.

Once the infrastructure is up and running, Utar will be working closely with YTL Comms to nurture the development of Internet applications in the university’s technology degree courses.

University of Indonesia | Jakarta and West Java

University of Indonesia | Jakarta & Depok, Indonesia

Location: Depok, West Java and Jakarta
Total students: more than 40.000 (half of them are postgraduates).

Quote:
INDONESIA: Plans for 'world's largest library'

The University of Indonesia, the country's leading higher education institution, has announced spectacular plans to build "the largest library in Asia, possibly the world".

In a country without a deep-rooted reading culture, although the national literacy rate is far above what it was in Dutch colonial times, this is indeed ambitious and possibly rather reckless. UI will be taking on a student body with much the same indifference to book reading as the wider public, although proponents of the library, to be built at Depok outside Jakarta, are optimistic.

Another problem facing Indonesia is a lack of trained and qualified librarians and archivists. Clearly, a library of this scale requires a large, well-trained staff yet the plans are for an eight-storey building surrounded by gardens. UI visualises 10,000 users per day while the student enrolment is 45,000 but some use the other UI campus at Salemba in Jakarta.

The size of the building would be equivalent to that of the excellent Singapore National Library so claims it will be the largest in Asia are not well-grounded. Funding is proposed to come from the state and from industry as the university hopes the library will provide a focus for industry-related research projects being undertaken by its lecturers.

Late last year, UI announced it would be extending research cooperation with BATAN, the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Research Institute, and the library will be an inducement in this. As part of the funding will be from the state oil company PERTAMINA, the library is expected to attract people from the oil industry.

Scepticism may be in order but UI is responding to ministry of national education efforts to increase the international profile of Indonesia's researchers and the university expects the library project will play a part in this.

UGM at 250th of World University Rankings

Universitas Gadjah Mada has once again established itself as a world class university. The Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings, an independent group established by the Times in the UK, has placed UGM at 250th of this year's rankings.
The rankings published by the THE-QS on 9 October 2009 are the result of a year-long survey of thousands of universities around the world. The survey has been conducted based on 6 criteria. These are: Academic Peer Review (40%), Employer Review (10%), Faculty Student Ratio (20%), Citations per Faculty (20%), International Faculty (5%) and International Students (5%). The six criteria have been made the basis for the total scores of each university.
Indonesia Other Indonesian universities included among the best 500 universities are UI (201) and ITB (351). UGM's ranking has increased significantly as in 2008, UGM was at 316th (UI 287 and ITB 315).
Not the aim The world ranking is something to be thankful for, but that is not the purpose that UGM aims to achieve, as all members of UGM academic community are more committed on how to accelerate learning quality, research, community service, management and cooperation. Therefore, the international acknowledgment will be interpreted as a challenge to work harder in order to put the vision of UGM to become a world class research university into reality.
With the support from all members of the academic community and alumni, UGM, the government and other Indonesian major universities, all will continue to promote the dignity of Indonesia through education.
International cooperation As a world class university, UGM currently has 900 foreign students from 54 countries. In addition, UGMÂ has MoU-based cooperation with 340 international universities and organisations.
