Are we celebrating birthdays of single stations now? What is the goal of it?

He's referring to the extension of the rail line northward, the first push of rail service outside the perimeter highway. For Atlanta, the poster child for suburban sprawl at the time, that was a big achievement.

Technically Indian Creek Station was the first OTP 3 years earlier, but that station is pretty much a Park & Ride station.

True. With the redevelopment of the GM plant, Doraville will be less so in the future. I'm also not saying anything bad about Park & Ride. They are definitely good things to have in a geographically spread metro like Atlanta.

You're right. I Keep forgetting about that one, as I'm rarely ever out that way.

Oh how I wish I could go back in time and get Cobb and Gwinnett on board with rail from the start.

Atlanta's MARTA rail system is currently 49.21 miles long. Dallas's DART rail system is currently 90.09 miles long. Enough said. (Streetcar miles not counted.)

Dallas is light rail though. Light rail is the poor man's heavy rail.

Only cities that have heavy rail are morally pure.

Before this gets carried away... Let's stay on topic, boys. No city-vs-city crap here.

State withdraws threat to shut down Atlanta streetcar
David Wickert
6:21 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2016

The Georgia Department of Transportation has backed away from its threat to shut down Atlanta’s trouble streetcar.

In a letter to the city Tuesday, GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said the agency will continue reviewing Atlanta’s plans to fix dozens of problems outlined in recent audits. But he said GDOT is satisfied with the city’s recent progress after months of delay.

“We no longer anticipate issuing a cease operations order,” McMurry wrote to Atlanta officials. “However, it should be understood that additional clarification or content from the (streetcar) team may be required for full compliance.”

Marta issues RFI for new metro train fleet
Tuesday, August 09, 2016

METROPOLITAN Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (Marta) has issued requests for information by August 30 for a fleet of new trains and for the life-extension of two-thirds of its existing fleet

Marta requires 250 metro cars to be operated as six-car trains. The authority plans to issue a request for proposals in December with a deadline for responses of April 2017, and intends to award the contract in November 2017. Delivery of the fleet will begin in 2020 and run through to 2026

Its a decent system, mostly running north-south and east-west with connection between the two main lines at Five Points station in downtown. There's security in most stations, cameras, etc. Depending where you need to go, I wouldn't rely on MARTA to take me all the way - unless you are going to downtown, midtown, buckhead, sandy springs or dunwoody, and decatur on the east line, you'd have to take busses or cabs. Atlanta is not a walkable city by any strtch of the imagination. Usually a good idea not to get off at any station south of Five Points, when going to the airport at night. Overall, you should be ok.

You can get a day pass at any of the machines available at all stations, cash or card.
