This location would be good for other big buildings as well.. it is far enough from historic downtown and there are already quite many mid-rises (around 20F, like the ones you can see in the photos at Moskovskaya Ploschad). Very good start for Spb skyscraper cluster

.. also good timing, now that I move back to Finland I could visit this construction site next summer perhaps.

Haha somebody thought this was in Africa because St Petersburg ends with "burg" as does Johannesburg.

Anyway, where is this building? I mean where is it within the city of St Petersburg?

I wonder if St Petersburg is the largest city in the Western world without direct flights to the USA.

I hope that direct flights will appear with the completion of construction a new terminal of Pulkovo airport in 2013.

St Petersburg doesn't even have direct flights to Nizhny Novogorod (Russia's 4th largest city) so why would you expect them to have flights to NY.

I drove past this building last week, it's a long long way from the city centre, it's also very ugly.

St Petersburg does have direct high-speed trains to NN on the Sapsan via Moscow's Kurskiy vokzal. I think those take about seven hours. And starting next month, there will be a high-speed line in service between Helsinki and St Petersburg. I mean high-speed by Russian standards; this is more Acela and less Shinkansen/TGV.

I had to fly JFK-LED via MUC and my luggage didn't transfer with me. I would have gladly taken a direct flight, even if it cost more. Much more convenient. I think there's a market for direct JFK-LED, and I hope there will be a flight in the near future. St Petersburg has a population of more than 4 million, and there are many cities in Europe with population less than 1 million (e.g. Stuttgart, Bristol) with direct flights to USA.

Yes, this bldg is somewhat far from the city center, but it's within walking distance of stantsiya metro Moskovskaya, which is just 7 stops from Nevskiy Prospekt. St Petersburg Metro is fast, frequent and reliable but also very deep - you sometimes spend more time on the escalators than in the train, especially on short journeys. As a matter of fact, stantsiya metro Moskovskaya is the terminal for city buses to Pulkovo, so that's another reason this is a convenient site for development. There are very few tall buildings in downtown, and the ones that are there (e.g. Mont Blanc) look very out of place. I'm sure those are the most expensive condos in the city, but high-rises should be confined to the outskirts.

But 7 hours on a train would mean I would need to take another day on my trip, stupid when they used to have a flight in a turboprop which took about 2 hours, now if someone flew an A320 or 737 the flight would be approx 1 hour or so, at the moment having to transfer in Moscow means you spend 4 hours getting from NN to St Petes, crazy.
