Getting brutalism right

First of all, 60-70% of all pics in this thread are NOT examples of brutalism as usually defined. Instead, they are examples of its cousin of 2nd degree, the modernist-functionalist building of the 1950s-1970s.

Many people claim brutalism is ugly, but I dare to disagree. When done right, brutalist buildings can be totally awesome.

However, there are two important conditions:

- it is not a cheap style, and when done on the cheap, results are bad. From a strictly engineering viewpoint, brutalist buildings are "overbuilt" in many senses. So you gotta do it right. There is no room for "run of the mill" brutalism, and when you try that, results are banlieus.

- when exposed, concrete needs proper maintenance over time. If not properly cared for, exposed concrete or steel will look not "old" but "worn out".

I watched BSG, but haven't noticed that!

Btw, Canadian people must feel odd watching those series (especially those, who studied there ).

Brutal London

These are all amazing shots guys and all prime examples of brutalism. I my opinion nothing really beats the GENEX TOWER, so ugly yet so iconically beautiful :-)

These are some of my shots from around London

Nice ones from Australia!

I don't know if it's real brutalism, but I do like Habitat 67 at Montreal:

The Council of Europe in Strasbourg is the fugliest I've ever seen... Does that make it successful brutalist architecture?

Marchiondi-Spagliardi institute in Milan

image hosted on flickr

It has a ruin for years now, but they've declared an architectural monument (it was designed by famous architect vittoriano viganò) and they're restoring it now.
As a bonus track, a less famous but an interesting building with some nice interiors:

San Giovanni Bono church, not so far from Marchiondi-Spagliardi institute:

Still I don't like this style, but I recognize that in its age it has been interesting and original...
