Josep Lluis Sert's Boston University Law Tower Restored, Expanded

Quote:
One of the major works of Josep Lluis Sert, dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design for 16 years beginning in 1953 and a Cambridge-based architect, was the Boston University School of Law tower off Commonwealth Avenue. The Barcelona-born Sert designed the 18-story, 265-foot building in the early 1960s, one of several in Boston and Cambridge that he conceived during that period, including at BU. The law tower was recently restored, in particular its lattice of external green and red panels, and also majorly upgraded in the form of a five-story addition called the Redstone Building (after the Viacom chief). That addition holds the more technologically advanced classroom space of the law school, while Sert's creation remains primarily an office tower with conference space and a mock courtroom.

One of the best examples of brutalist restoration.

Hopefully the upcoming renovation of the Balfron Tower will mirror it in quality.

This kind of articles keep appearing more and more:

Why we must learn to love brutalist architecture

I found this bit particularly interesting:

Quote:
Beanland believes our concrete nostalgia is a protest against the greed of the current housing market, with cities like London being bought up by the international super-rich. “The 21st-century reappraisal of brutalism is partly an attempt to re-invoke pre-1979 values of social democracy – even though the ‘democracy’ wasn’t necessarily all it was cracked up to be.”

I used to hate the brutalist buildings in my town - I've considered them grey, ugly and uninspiring, but with time I've learned and educated myself about the brutalism as a concept in architecture, and although I'm not an architect, today brutalism is one of my favorite architectural styles.

^ I used to hate concrete architecture too, but the kind of concrete architecture that impregnated my day to day life was post - apocaliptic stuff like in so many places in the former communist areas. Once I emmigrated and decayed commie stuff disappeared from my radar, my perception could change and focus and architectural achievements in concrete. Also, not coincidentally, I leaned very to the left in political views (still a liberal, mind), and I did grow to appreciate the achivements of social democracy (and even of communism, although I've not become an apologist of totalitarism at all), like in the quote I posted. Discovering pics of commie blocks looking good when new helped a lot.

A few years ago I thought brutalism was run-down commieblock architecture, like the ones in Romania, but all the beautiful examples in this thread helped me see how amazing it can be when it's done right.

I've also noticed lots of articles about brutalism from the past two or three years. There are even ones defending run-down council estates.

^that's a genuinely amazing piece of architecture. And actually, it is quite moving, especially the part with the pillars disappearing into the light - when you know this is a crematorium. Thank you for this post.

Yeah, those pillars are in my opinion pure genius.

The light blue looks quite striking against the concrete. I also like the mix of symmetry and asymmetry with the main hall and the pillars. Maybe that water feature could have been a bit bigger
