For some of the older buildings on campus, please visit McMaster University: The Main Campus 1.

On a sunny fall day, look over the Dundas Valley from the edge of the Escarpment near Rock Chapel, and you see the campus of McMaster University.
It’s dominated by one giant building ...

... the one now known as McMaster Children’s Hospital.
It opened in 1972 as McMaster University Health Sciences Centre, and quickly built an excellent reputation as a teaching and research hospital, which it still retains.
But I’m interested in it as architecture.
Close up, on a grey winter day, there’s not much colour in evidence.

It was built in brutalist style ...

... that is, with repeated modular elements that place function above adornment and expose a lot of bare concrete ...

... and the architect reveals some of the building’s guts as a way of celebrating its functionality.
The effect is ... well ... brutal!

The building has a large interior courtyard.
It contains only the odd dashes of colour – that minimalist sculpture, those recycling bins.
It’s the sort of space that might work for a contemporary art gallery or maximum security prison, but a children’s hospital ...?

I find that it’s almost as if the building demands to be portrayed in black and white ...

... as it seems to want to exclude all colour from the world.

True, the building was not designed specifically as a children’s hospital ... but that’s what it is now.

It would be the perfect setting for the Ministry of Love in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four!
Note: when the building opened, its interior was brilliantly coloured, e.g., featuring 1960s Op Art style carpets and wall decorations.
Little of those colours remain today.

I wonder if there's any photos of the original interior.

It's kind of a mix of brutalism and structuralist architecture

Habib Bank Plaza in Karachi, Pakistan. Completed in 1972, it was the tallest building in Pakistan (101m) until 2005 when MCB Tower was completed with 116min height.

I think it is a fine example of Brutalist architecture because of the trapezoids sticking out all around in a repetitive pattern. In my opinion, it looks much less gloomier than many brutalist buildings which are not painted and are left with a sad gray facade.

Why are they painting it? More importantly, why are they painting it after they've already powerwashed the facade?
