And last but not least an original example of brutalist religious building dedicated to Virgin Mary, Monte Grisa, on the top of the city, it can be viewed from the very central city square

That last one is cool. I love the triangular cross-bracing patterns.

I still find it hard to believe the Leeds Univeristy buildings are 30+ years old. The concrete and glass look fresh!

People always say 'Oh, those 60s architects were insane' when they haven't even realized how bored everyone was back then of those old brick buildings everywhere.
As an artist myself, I'm personally irritated when people dismiss brutalist buidings as 'horrid 70s monstrosities' when they don't even bother to note how unique and awe inducing some of them can be. It's a really closed-minded mentality...
I couldn't have put it better myself. These buildings present us with large, totalitarian, idealistic gestures, and I feel a great deal of emotion upon witnessing the patina of time taking it's toll on these, once squeaky clean, future-looking behemoths. However, I can't judge those who hate this style. Different people come from different places, and, at different stages in life, may or may not be willing to explore the more visceral and totalitarian aspects of our culture and collective psyche... but I digress.

I think that's probably because during the period which we're currently showcasing, socialist countries embarked on tremendously large, state-driven reorganizations of their urban spaces, followed by a relatively long period of stagnation during and after the fall of communism. Most of this architecture was of the prefab/concrete/modernist kind, thus the notion that Brutalism is prevalent in socialist countries. I don't know that a similarly large effort favoring one particular style of construction took place in the United States. (Yes, I know this is debatable).

Back on topic, although Toronto's affair with Brutalism is generally more functional than inspiring, here's a lesser known example of this style that I find more compelling than Robarts Library:
222 Jarvis, originally the head office of Sears Canada, completed in 1971 by Maxwell Miller

I don't have a picture of it, but the National Center for Atmospheric Research building in Boulder, CO is one of my favorites. Unlike most brutalist designs, it fits well with its environment and still looks good today.

I think any Brutalist building that is situated in an area with greenery fits well. Plus, the pinkish colour (although I don't care for it) seems to blend it in with the surorounding rocky terrain.
