So, for the person sat in their appartment, the windows would go dark and light every 30-63 seconds.... Quite restful...

The same douchehats who are trying to oppose the Cuba Street towers no doubt, some self-righteous pillock seems to have militarised a lot of the IoD locals against new developments lately.

Cuba Street towers are on the other side of the Isle of Dogs, so wouldn't be affected.

I was thinking some more about a possible extension. The only one that I could come up with that seems at all viable would be a link from North Greenwich to Maze Hill station.

This station is located on the north-east corner of Greenwich Park and for anyone travelling from either direction on the Jubilee Line this would be a interesting/good way of getting to Greenwich - it is actually closer to the Park than either the Greenwich or Cutty Sark stations. Conversely, it would also provide a away for people travelling along the line that runs from London Bridge through Woolwich and beyond to get to the O2 for concerts or exhibitions...

(Note that I chose Maze Hill because pylons any further west would spoil the views of Grennwich area and would certanly never receive planning permission.)

I think extending it further, especially as far as some have mentioned is Not a good idea. Why?

This is bound to break down at some point, and having hundreds of carriages stuck in mid-air would be a nightmare.

Many cable cars in the alps operate with multiple independent sections. The gondolas make the transition from one loop to the next by means of machinery at the stations. So a failure in one section would not mean everyone being stuck.

Exactly. The slow-running rails for boarding/alighting can be reconfigured to route the cars on to the next section. This actually makes extending the system pretty easy, as you can do all the construction and testing of the new route segment without interrupting the existing one. When it's time to open the extension to passengers, the overhead guideway can be switched overnight.

Not that I think this is a sensible system to extend.

I think a lot of residents on the Isle of Dogs are opposed to the highest housing density in the country plus the fact that high rise buildings are trying to creep further out from the Canary Wharf and South Quay areas. The proposed Asda development would add hundreds of new flats and do away with the only petrol station on the island which in turn would greatly increase traffic as they would have to use the only two roads off the island to fill up.

The Isle of Dogs can't sustain endless development.

Good grief why not? It seems an ideal place for development, not just buildings but infastructure to support it. Tunnels, bridges, new roads... oh hold on this is 21st century Britain, sorry I should of known, mediocrity and wallowing in your own uninspired squalor it is then.

Lets be serious here, what is the capacity of the Isle of Dogs? South of the Wharf there are only two roads to rely on and currently all rail services are jammed packed. Crossrail will only take care of future phases of Canary wharf. At some point this limit will be reached.

The local council also developed a planning brief for the area under the millenium quarter plan. The plan did propose that the Tallest buildings were to be in the centre and the North with buildings stepping down towards neighbouring residential areas. All perfectly valid planning concepts.

Personally I feel circumstances have changed and the idea that South Quay was going to develop as more Office towers is long gone. I also quite like the towers proposed but I can also see that others may feel differently.

The cars travel pretty quickly. The Journey will probably only be a few minutes long.

There's a large platform area from where you take a running leap into the cabin.

The south station is looking a lot more complete. There were three cars being tested travelling across while I was there this morning.

The cars hang from the cable on a detachable clamp. As the car enters the station, a mechanism lifts the clamp off the cable, decelerates the car with a series of progressively slower-spinning rubber wheels and transfers it to a slow-moving chain. The chain moves the cabins at a slow walking pace around the edge of the station, giving passengers plenty of time to alight and board, before the reverse process accelerates the car back onto the cable. It's a very flexible system, as it allows the boarding section of the line to be run at varying speeds, or for cars to be switched in and out of the system without stopping the cable.

Well they've broken this already...they are building very very high all along Chrisp St..they are building high and very close to the pavements too ... not offering pedestrians any room to breathe.....creating a horrific tunnel...loc authorities don't know how to build elegantly tall ...they don't have a clue nor the aptitude they just tick off a check list.....I have heard stories from people well positioned to know and they say that LBTH planning dept is full of corrupt brown envelope bagger.....
