Montreal 2010 | Forged in a collision of two empires

I just got back from Montreal, which is the largest city in Quebec, which, in turn, is the largest Canadian province. I shall gradually upload all, or most, pictures. It was an exotic experience, unique in North America, where British and French empires have left a momentous influence.

To be continued . . .

The most uncomfortable aspect of the trip was the brutal heat, nearing 100 degrees. It's one thing to run from a car to an office and another to walk for 14-15 hours daily. Some of the first batch pics were made from a car, it was too hot to get out.

The natural hill is a Royal Mountain which gives the city it's modern name. There's an awesome observation deck there overlooking the entire city.

I decided not to sort out the pictures in any way, because it would take too long

Unfortunately windows at the hotel were dirty.

Thanks. There will be a lot more. Now we'll be slowly moving from the downtown (centre vielle) to the old city.

It's a shame that as nice a city as it is streetside, so many of the larger and taller buildings (in my opinion) are pretty ugly.

Thanks. I have lots more, but I'm afraid that it will be too much for one page.

Here is a hint.. there are 20 entries per page for SSC. If you spread out the photos into about a dozen per entry, with multiple entries, the pages are much easier to download!

I'll take a mental note of that, thanks

Nice pics, how warm was it that you couldn't get out of the car? I visited Montréal during the winter of 2004 and I cannot imagine it being HOT hahah.

It certainly looks much better in the summer, when I was there it was all wet and snowy, so the city got pretty ugly and I didn't like it that much. I bet if I went there again in the summer it'd be all different.

Montréal is a very unique city, one of the few bilingual cities in the world and it mixes in a very interesting manner that usual North American feel with the French culture it has.

The temperature was 92-100 F, 33 - 38 C with very bright sunlight and relatively high humidity. You can get out of the car, but after hours of walking it gets extremely exhausting. I know Montreal is usually a cold city, but in my experience the weather approached equatorial Africa

Regarding the language, I was expecting many people to be native English speakers, and haven't met a single one. Everyone spoke with a distinctive French accent but most young people knew perfect English as well. As soon as you say Je ne parle pas francais, most people switch to English. Although, in my experience, cops barely knew any English.

It depends where you are. The West Island has more native English speakers.
