These are only surface fissures and there is nothing to be alarmed about, says Chief Engineer Hairline cracks have been ‘continuously found' in five flyovers at Narayanaguda, Masab Tank, Lalaguda, Basheerbagh, old airport and CTO by the GHMC appointed Stup Consultants which studied 40-odd flyovers in the capital built by different departments. “These are only surface fissures and there is nothing to be alarmed about. We have already done preliminary testing and realised that these are not major faults but we will take up rectification measures,” explained Chief Engineer R. Dhan Singh. He said that glass plates were placed near the cracks for a few days to check for any expansions. Since the glass panes did not crack up, it was concluded that the fissures are only in the surface as no expansion was detected. In a detailed inventory note, the consultant noted that expansion joints have to be repaired at some places and bearings have to be replaced underneath the superstructure of these flyovers. Bearings have a lifespan of 18-20 years and need to be replaced, he said. Pressure points The Chief Engineer explained that during the construction stage itself, specific pressure points are earmarked reinforced with extra concrete for raising the superstructure a wee bit for precisely such a job to remove the ‘extinct bearings' and replace them with fresh ones. It was an extremely delicate task needing the traffic to be diverted. Repairs proposed Such work is about to be taken up on the Dabeerpura flyover where repair of all expansion joints and replacing bearings along with grouting is being proposed at a cost of more than two crore rupees. “We are waiting for the traffic police permission to commence the work,” he said. Otherwise, the consultant has not detected any major flaw in the flyovers. It had, however, advised that dead load of the flyovers should not be increased henceforth by taking up regular bitumen metal layers on the surface. Existing layer has to be scrapped first if fresh road is to be laid. Mr. Singh pointed out that for the first time they have the complete profile of the flyovers which would help in periodic maintenance works once a year as most were built by agencies like R&B, HUDA, etc., and handed over to the civic body. The services of another technical consultant, Civil Aid, would be utilised to suggested measures to take up remedial measures as also the periodic maintenance part, he added. |

Lalapet, Masab Tank flyovers to get a facelift The New Indian Express HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will take up repair works based on the detailed investigation reports on flyovers at Lalapet, Masab Tank, Narayanguda and the road over bridge at Khairatabad. The decision comes after a survey of bridges and flyovers revealed that they reportedly developed hairline cracks on the main girders. GHMC officials said the inventory-cum-condition survey to collect detailed data for all bridges, ROBs and flyovers was taken up to collect information about their general conditions. The work of inventory-cum-condition survey was entrusted to M/S Stup Consultants. Out of 37 structures proposed, reports on 28 structures have been received and observations made in the final reports draw attention towards the condition of wearing coat joint/ expansion joints, bearing pads, pedestals and hairline cracks on the main girders, which are part of the regular maintenance works on bridges. These type of issues are generally observed in ROBs, bridges, flyovers and can be rectified by taking up regular maintenance works, they added. Necessary further investigations will thus be taken up for Lalapet, Masab Tank and Narayanguda flyovers and Khairatabad RoB. GHMC to Remove Roadside Encroachments Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will take up demolition of encroachments on road margins in all 18 circles on a priority basis from July 26 to 30. GHMC took the decision after the AP High Court, Lok Ayukta and Human Rights Commission expressed displeasure about the traffic congestion in the city and encroachments made on the road margins and public places. They directed the corporation to take necessary steps to remove the encroachments which have been causing inconvenience to vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement and thereby leading to frequent accidents. GHMC has prepared an action plan for the removal of these encroachments in GHMC limits. Police force will be used to maintain law and order during the removal as there is a possibility of untoward incidents during the encroachment removal drive.

P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway Cleaning Mess!!!!
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle2307968.ece
It might be one of the most prestigious projects of the city and stake claim as country's longest such facility, but the P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway sadly lack day-to-day maintenance. Built to provide seamless connectivity from the city with the International Airport at Shamshabad and opened for traffic in October, 2009, the 11.8 km elevated stretch has no daily maintenance mechanism in place so far. While roads in most parts of the city get swept on daily basis, the expressway continues to be left unattended and neglected. Vehicular traffic heading for the airport or returning to city from there is being forced to travel on a stretch that is neither swept nor cleaned. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) which constructed the elevated expressway says that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has to take up the task of daily maintenance of the stretch. “We do not have the necessary equipment such as sweeping machines or manpower. Like it does in the rest of the city, the GHMC has to take up the task. We have even approached them a couple of times on the issue,” says an official with the HMDA. With the GHMC not taking up the job here, the HMDA is doing the sweeping on the long stretch “once in a while”. As per the agreement, the contractor who built the expressway has structural liability for a period of two years. According to officials, this liability is for the structure and to attend to defects if any that could crop up, and certainly not sweeping the road on a daily basis. HMDA's complaint is that the municipal corporation has not taken up the maintenance job on two other facilities, one flyover at Hitec City and another at Langar Houz. In fact, the corporation also promised to take up landscaping in the space below the Langar Houz flyover but has not been done so far, officials rue. |

: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which has taken up demolition of unauthorised structures in cellars of commercial complexes, shopping malls and business establishments, is still to factor in other key reasons contributing to the parking problems and traffic congestion on thoroughfares.
The corporation took up a special drive against parking violations a few days ago. Till Saturday, the GHMC Town Planning wing demolished encroachments in cellars of 30 buildings. Apart from the unauthorised structures in cellars of buildings, GHMC officials admit shopkeepers and customers have been using the widened portion of roads for parking purpose. Also, some road margins have officially been made parking lots with the corporation even collecting parking fee from motorists. For instance, though the Mettuguda-Tarnaka road was widened a couple of years ago, at some places, the widened portion is being used for parking vehicles, leading to traffic chaos during peak hours. At Sanman hotel in Tarnaka, traffic jams have become the norm due to vehicles parked on the road. The corporation officials claim traffic police have to regulate traffic, while the traffic police blame the GHMC for permitting the restaurant owner to run business without providing parking space. Similarly, the Liberty-Himayatnagar stretch was widened to 120 feet, but half the carriageway is occupied by vehicles of customers and shop owners. On RP Road too, shopkeepers park their vehicles on the congested 60 feet road from morning till late night, creating traffic jams on the stretch. "On the RP Road, the corporation permitted road dividers for commercial exploitation a year ago. This is aggravating traffic woes on the stretch," Vemu Arun Kumar, an engineer with APTransco and a resident of Secunderabad, said. Interestingly, several denizens are parking vehicles on roads as some complexes and malls charge hefty parking fee illegally. Customers visiting GVK Mall on Road No 1, Banjara Hills or Spencers Hyper Market in Musheerabad have to cough up a parking fee to park their vehicles. Similarly, Jade Arcade, a commercial complex in Paradise, is collecting parking fee. Some other complexes provide free parking only if customers make purchases in their malls. "It has come to our notice that some of the malls, markets and complexes managements are collecting parking fee but it is not in our purview," GHMC chief city planner GV Raghu told STOI. GHMC has identified parking violations of five categories as per directions of the Lokayukta, but is now concentrating only on encroachments in cellars. "GHMC will take up all parking violations one after the other. As of now, the corporation has taken up cellar violations," the chief city planner said. |

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority is planning to develop three more radial roads for better connectivity to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and facilitate smooth flow of traffic.
A few days ago, the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited, a joint venture of HMDA and Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh invited tenders from eligible bidders for construction of three more radial roads. They include radial road no. 11 from Jeedimetla to Saregudem, radial road no. 16 from ECIL crossroads to Cherial crossroads and radial road no. 22 from Nagole Junction to Gourelly crossroads. The last date for submitting bids is September 22. HMDA officials said construction of the roads will be taken up with funds being provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project will enable access from different inner ring roads to the ORR and also strengthen and widen existing stretches, equip them with central medians and take up beautification works to develop these connecting roads. |

Bridge on Bapu Ghat to be opened in October
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle2345927.ece
The bridge being built across the river Musi at Bapu Ghat has entered the last lap of construction and would be completed and opened for traffic in the first week of October. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has taken up the project at a cost of Rs.4.59 crore, which when operational promise to reduce the traffic problems in the bustling Langar Houz area offering connectivity from Bapu Ghat with Attapur Colony side. The two-lane bridge spread over 11.05 metres with a 7.5 metre wide carriageway has completed major part of the work including that related to four spans. “A total of seven spans form the bridge and two will be completed by the month-end with the last scheduled to be done in September,” said an official. The 307.5 metre long project has a bridge length of 175 metres over the Musi and the rest going in for ramp landing on either side at Bapu Ghat and Hyderguda. “Once the last of the span work is done next month, we will complete the ramp works too and have the facility ready for inauguration by Gandhi Jayanthi on October 2,” the official said. The project had been conceived to provide relief for the traffic that has been increasing in this area over the years and particularly after the coming of the international airport at Shamshabad and P.V.Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway. The vehicles proceeding towards the elevated expressway via Langar Houz would be able to avoid the long U-turn and save at least 1.5 km to 2 km driving length on this stretch. |

The Gachibowli flyover built by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Friday. The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, S.Jaipal Reddy, Minister for Municipal Administration M.Maheedhar Reddy, Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy and others will participate in the inaugural. The flyover with a length of 1.45 km has been built at a cost of Rs.21.60 crore and is set on 56 piers and two abutments. Four-lane carriageway The width of the project is 17.50 metres and comes with a four-lane carriageway and 1.5 wide metre central median while the service roads on either side of the flyover are 14.10 metres wide, including footpaths, according to the HMDA.
