Most of the buildings are very ugly, but no doubt it´s an experience to travel through the hugeness of Cairo. Do you have pictures from any of the beatiful small gardens of some old houses? (they make such a contrast with the dusty and crowded streets...

thanks for the photos

Nice shots from Cairo! Yes, it looks a bit grey except from the Nile.

It's not really grey though, it's all sandy-yellow from the sand-storms (plus a bit of smog). There's absolutely nothing you can do against it.

The middle-class and upper-class neighbourhoods do have an surprising amount of trees.
This is Dokki, where I used to live for a short time:

I'm really hoping for a street-level thread of Cairo neighborhoods someday. When I used to live there, I was not all that interested in taking
pictures and it was before digital-cameras got really popular anyway.

Two more comments and there will be new photos. I'll show the poorest districts and the oldest mosque.

I was shocked by conditions of really huge areas of human developments. Visiting this place had one big advantage - I felt really lucky because of living in Poland. I hope the Egyptian government will make something to help this people. Area is very very big and it's getting bigger every day (my trips' guide said that in every 30 seconds in Egypt is born new kid). Egyptian society looks very young. Comparing to Cairo my town looks like social house for retired people. And women aren't very seen there - they hardly ever work or drive a car.

that sounds like you where shocked.

Slums is indeed a problem in Egypt as whole not only Cairo. but recently the government promised a free-slums Cairo and possibly Egypt by 2014.

I quite like the history of this city. It's ancient walls speak for them selfs when you walk around it's roads. Cairo it's self isn't a pharaonic city. infact the pyramids aren't in Cairo. but Cairo is an Islamic City that's why it's buildings feels thick compare to modern cities the glass make the building look very thin and more simple which is why it's not the kind of city that fit's many people's appetites.
