Coffee and cakes - visual gastronomy of Riga city

I have an idea about this thread for a long while already, and I decided that today - when Riga is visible in SSC banner - is the right time to start it.

The metaphor of "coffee and cakes"

Beautiful buildings can be visually compared to cakes. They have similar shapes, buildings' ornamentations are like cream glazing on cakes and I can easily imagine "eating" those buildings if I were a giant with an enormous spoon and refined taste-buds.

Don't know how about you, but I cannot eat a cake without a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate, or cocoa). So, also here I had to think about what will be "coffee". "Cups of coffee" in this thread will be overall street views - where the city's life pulse can be seen (people, traffic, shop signs, etc.). I hope those street views will give you an energy dose just like a cup of coffee do.

And sometimes after coffee and cakes we can have a snack of some fruits - like green grapes, f.e. In this thread their analogue will be Riga's gardens and parks - another beautiful feature of Riga city.

My aim is to show you the most ornated and glamorous Riga buildings in this thread. Riga doesn't have the big "cakes" - palaces, but it has numerous medium sized decorative and posh buildings.

! Best viewed while drinking coffee and eating cake. Just be cautious and don't spill on your computer, as I once did !

Cake #1 - National Art Museum. This large Historism building was the first one in Baltic states built with a purpose to be the museum. Nowadays it houses more than 52,000 works of art reflecting the development of professional art in the Baltic area and in Latvia from the middle of the 18th century up until the present time. It also features Russian art from the 16th to the first half of the 20th century. Architect: W. Neumann (German).

Cake #2 - Vīlandes street 1. Very impressive and tasty "cake" on the corner of Vīlandes and Elizabetes streets - one of my most most favorite buildings in Riga. Built in 1898 as a tenement house, and here already the first Art Nouveau tendencies appeared.

Cake #3 - France embassy. This delightful white blue building is standing on one of Riga boulevards (Raiņa boulevard) just opposite to Bastejkalns park. It was built as a villa - German merchant Jacob Hammer built it for his daughter. It's interesting that the architect wasn't some German, but this time local - first academically educated Latvian architect Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis.

Cup of coffee #1 - Kaļķu street. Effervescent flow of people coming from and going to Old Town - some to work, some to shopping, and between them tourists doing sightseeing... If you like such active pulse of the city, then Kaļķu street is one of the places to be in Riga.

To be continued...

Cake #4 - Italy embassy. One of the most delicious Riga's Art Nouveau cakes (on Teātra street 9) is again occupied by embassy - this time Italian embassy. Originally the building was owned by book shopkeeper, built in 1904. The building has a sculpture with Atlants and globe on it's roof, designed by A. Volz, who has designed several more of the most famous Riga sculptures.

In light festival "Staro Riga" time:

Cake #5 - Elizabetes street 19. Another luxurious tenement house on the shining row of Elizabetes street northern part buildings, built around 1900.

The same cake without the "powder sugar"

Cake #6 - Elizabetes street 17. Neighbour to the previous building. Built in 1898.

This building is not only royal and beautiful, but even sexy - due to those stone girls.

Cup of coffee #2 - Brīvības street. Brīvības (Freedom) street is one of the longest and the main streets in the city, the central traffic arterie. Here you see it from the end of Brīvības boulevard, which is basically the same Brīvības street, only divided like an avenue, with trees and pavement in between. Here Brīvības street starts it's 12 km long journey through diverse and stunning architecture "forest" until the Eastern border of Riga.

Bunch of green grapes #1 - Riga canal in Bastejkalna park. We have ate 6 cakes and drunk 2 cup of coffees, now we can enjoy also the first bunch of green grapes. Riga canal and parks separates Old Town from New Town - and New Town is 19th/20th Century city blocks in Art Nouveau, Historism, Art Deco, Classicism and other architectural styles. Areas around Riga canal looks the most beautiful in spring (in the picture) or in autumn, if it's "golden autumn" and in a sunny day.

Riga already has Street view - although not Google's street view. http://www.1188.lv/karte360 - although they have taken rather gloomy pics in dark autumn days.

Cake #7 - National Theatre. National Theatre was built in 1902 - it was the second Riga's theatre at that time. The architect: Augusts Reinbergs. Sculptural works on the facade was done... again by Mr Volz! Btw, in this building, Latvia's Independence was proclamed in 1918.

Cake #8 - Art Academy of Latvia. Built 3 years after National Theatre - in 1905, it is considered to be one of the last eclecticism buildings which was built in Riga.

Cake #9 - Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the only one 20th Century beginning Neo Classicism style building in Riga. Initially built as a bank, on the upper floors it housed 6 and 10-room flats.

Cup of coffee #2 - Kalpaka boulevard.

Bunch of green grapes #2 - Opera garden.

Cake #11 - Elizabetes street 21. Neoclassicism style hotel building on Elizabetes/Pulkveza Brieza street corner is a former tenement house, built in 1883 - already before the big building explosion of Riga. Architect of the building - Edmund von Trompovsky.

Cake #12 - Jēkaba street 10/12. This ornated cake you can find in Old Town, close to Latvian parliament building.

Cup of coffee #3 - Marijas street. Another one of always lively places of Riga centre. Notice one of the city's TV screens there.

Of course, Neogothic

Here next cakes:

Cake #13 - Brīvības street 85. Example of Vertical Art Nouveau, Built in 1912, architect Eižens Laube. The original windows have been replaced though.

Cake #14 - Riga Latvian Society house. Originally built in 1868, it was reconstructed after the fire in 1908. There is also a beautiful decorative panel on the building made by one of the most famous Latvian painters Jānis Rozentāls, as you see in second picture upper part, unfortunately I haven't closer pic, will have to take one day.

Cup of coffee #4 - Barona street.

Cake #15 - Brīvības street 99. This is the only one Mikhail Eisenstein's designed "cake" which is located far away from his other masterpieces - in outer shell of the centre.

Cake #16 - Elizabetes street 23. Inscript "Labor Omnia Vincit" is noticeable on several buildings in Riga centre. It's a Latin phrase meaning "Hard work conquers all". However, the architect of this building - Hermann Hilbig didn't indulged too hard work at this building (at least with the facade) - he just used another German architect's Albert Giesecke sketches.

Cake #17 - Pulkveža Brieža street 2. A different style "cake", built in 1883.

Cup of coffee #5 - Tērbatas street

Cake #18. Latvia's National Opera. Standing in the park area between Old and New Town, Opera building is one of Riga's landmark buildings. It was built in 1863 and was designed to be viewed from all sides. Pictures are a bit outdated - now that stupid car parking isn't there anymore.
