About...

...Croatia (Hrvatska) is located in the Southeastern Europe between Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and bordering Italy across the Adriatic Sea. Its shape resembles that of a crescent or a horseshoe, which flanks its neighbours Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Its mainland territory is split in two non-contiguous parts by the short coastline of Bosnia and Herzegovina around Neum.
The terrain is diverse, including:
- plains, lakes and rolling hills in the continental north and northeast (Central Croatia and Slavonia, part of the Pannonian Basin);
- densely wooded mountains in Lika and Gorski Kotar, part of the Dinaric Alps;
- rocky coastlines on the Adriatic Sea (Istria, Northern Seacoast and Dalmatia).

Croatia is a privileged country with the Adriatic coastal length of more than 5000 km and 1,700 islands with the mountain peaks rising out of the sea.
Beautiful landscapes, the dramatic combination of mountain shapes that fall steeply into the sea and sandy beaches, medieval towns with interesting sights and very well preserved, the rich cruising offer along the coast are some of the considerations for choosing Croatia as the perfect holiday destination.
Of great importance and very well organized in Croatia are the Naturist Beaches (for nudism), marked with the symbol FKK (from the German "Freikorperkultur"), officially being declared 30 naturist (FKK) beaches.

The most important touristic objectives:

...Istria (Istra) is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Bay of Kvarner. It is shared by three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.

...Rovinj is one of the nine towns in the Istrian County, located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, a popular tourist resort and an active fishing port.
The town, as an ancient settlement (3rd century), is squeezed on a narrow peninsula and when you walk through its steep meandering lanes, cobbled squares and campiellis, you enter the centuries past by.
The coastal area is very well articulated with numerous bays, creeks and capes.

Being from 1283 to 1797 one of the the most important towns of Istria under the Republic of Venice, it was fortified by two rows of walls with three town gates. The remaining town walls date from this period. Close to the pier one can find the old town gate Balbi's Arch, dating from 1680, and a late-Renaissance clock tower.
After the fall of Venice and the Napoleonic parenthesis, Rovinj was part of the Austrian Empire until World War I. Then it belonged to Italy from 1918 to 1947, when it was ceded to SR Croatia within SFR Yugoslavia. During that period much of the Italian inhabitants left the city.

On the Route...

- Entering the Motorway 1 in Belgrade (Serbia):



- No Croatia/Zagreb traffic signs and indicators in Belgrade (and generally in entire Serbia):



- In Croatia, the A3 Motorway is passing far away from Zagreb, so the next pictures I'm posting are from the A6 and A7 Motorways when approaching the town Rijeka:





- On my route, between Zagreb and Rijeka I've counted 18 (!!!) tunnels on the A3, A6 and A7 Motorways:





- Rijeka seen from the A6 and partly A7 Motorways:





- The Tunel Ucka (length 5 - 6 km) is the border between Kvarner and Istria counties (the tax for passing it = aprox. 4 Euro):

Between Belgrade and Zagreb (Nb. 1 Motorway in Serbia and A3 in Croatia) the route is not so spectacular.
Only after Zagreb it becomes interesting because the A1 Motorway is passing through some hilly and mountain area, with dozens of overpasses and tunnels (18 counted by me).
