Probably only because sand is very cheap? I'm not smart in the technical side of railway construction. It seems that there's the sand embankment on which there is a layer of different sand on which there will be the granite ballast, concrete sleepers and rails.

In the last picture they are making a service road, not railway tracks.

Yes. You buy train ticket Rīga-Valga and use it in the bus

What's happening between Sigulda and Valga?

When I request the trains between Riga and Valga, I get three trains/day. The trains during daytime are replaced by buses between Ieriķi/Valmiera and Valga.

Only the evening train runs to Valga without having to change to a bus.

The waiting room will still have a ticket office.

Another reason, I suspect, why they've done it, is to reduce costs - after the 100% European funded reconstruction, LDz has given the station building to Jūrmala city so now they will be the ones paying for the upkeep of the loss-making building.

The platforms of Dubulti station will be reconstructed later this year.

I'm not a fan on contemporary art...
I will visit this place next week. Too late
It's screwed. Just buildings like this should be preserved in it's original state.

100% funded by the EU. The western taxpayers pay for senseless shit like this.

It used to be a very beautiful all-white station building

Now the roof is pitch black and the rest of the concrete is peach color...

And they haven't reconstructed it much. Maybe they still will (the platforms yes, but the building?), but they haven't done much. I do love the new windows though.

And people do miss the waiting room

The old trains are nearing the end of their lifetime so PV tries to make it through until the modernized trains get delivered.

But also there are track renewals: Many Valga direction trains run only as far as Ieriķi with replacement buses to Cēsis, Valmiera, Valga.

But an old train can just drive until Valga? Or does the train turn back halfway, so they can provide service with less trains?

So (western) European taxpayers pay a lot of money to take away the waitingroom from Latvian people using the train? That's just ridiculous!

Why must this kind of rubbish be in a stationbuiling, changing the building unrecognizable, while there are so many empty buildings everywhere?

It's all about the kilometers. It turns back halfway.

Park & Ride in Dobele

At Dobele station the old sugar beet loading bay has been turned into a carpark for commuters

Completed ČME3ME

Seems that the first of the totally rebuilt ČME3ME locomotives have been completed, numbers 3150 and 3235. The ČME3ME are more economical (less powerful) versions than ČME3M.

DMU modernization nearing completion

By the end of September the first of 6 sets will be completed and the rest will be delivered to the national operator PV by the end of November. The trains are so rebuilt that the factory told it would have been easier to build new ones.

Pictures from db.lv

PV tries to buy new trains for the 3rd time

National operator PV has issued a new tender for new trains after the first two were unsuccessful. This time they want to buy 32 large-capacity EMUs (450 seats compared to 250 of previous tenders) and have very ambitious plans regarding passenger number increase—they plan to double the amount of passengers in Rīga region withing 3 years of the introduction of the new trains.

Redoubling of port railway

LDz has started redoubling a small section of Kundziņsala port railway: Brasa—3.km. Well, it's such a small section that it's more of a passing place, to be honest.

How much money if any is available for the purchase of new trains? Not a problem to buy that many EMU's as long as the funding is there...

Doubling maybe not, but the suburban train passenger numbers could be increased dramatically by faster travel times and a better organised time table.

I haven't got a clue... There is no EU money, no state money. They say that they will take a loan from a bank.

Yeah, they want to introduce a similarly ambitious fixed 15 minute interval (during peak hours near Rīga).

First test run of modernized DR1AC DMUs

You can start watching at 3:13

The first applicants in the new EMU procurement are known:
– CAF
– Stadler
– Talgo
– Škoda
– Ural Locomotives

Rail Baltica public consultation has begun

The number of private properties that the new rail line will cross has been reduced from 2000 to less than 1000.

As much as possible, the planned rail route has been combined with other infrastructure corridors to reduce the number of "barriers" in nature. The rail line is combined with planned high voltage power line to Estonia, the planned Ķekava bypass expressway and Rīga bypass road.

Station reconstructions still ongoing

Rīga – Salaspils railway is undergoing signalling upgrade. The disturbances have lead to very rare sights on our railways:

Electric trains have been lengthened to 8 cars. For the first time since late 1990ies!

Empty DMUs have been coupled to form trains 15 cars long!
