Zurich S-Bahn (Portrait, News, Infos)

Short Info

The S-Bahn Zurich is the urban/suburban railnetwork of the Zurich metropolitan area.

The official S-Bahn-System was inaugurated in 1990 and was used by 150'00 passengers/day (the statistics count the amount of travellers crossing the city borders). In 2007 360'000 passengers crossed the city border by S-Bahn everyday. (increase of 240%!)





History
In 1968 the "Goldcoastexpress" was inaugurated. The new bought rolling stock drove from Zurich mainstation to Rapperswil and back. It was the inofficial first S-Bahn-Line. The trains (called "Mirage") are still in use until the end of 2008.

Rolling Stock

DPZ RE450 (Doppelstockpendelzug / doubledeck commuter train)
Length: 100m
Capacity: 386 seats
Amount: 115
Delivered: early 90s

The DPZ-Trains were delivered in the early 90s and are the most important trains in the S-Bahn Zurich rolling stock. Maximum 3 trains of this type can be combined to one. Such 300m compositions are used on the most important lines (for example S5 and S12) and have 1158 seats (and for sure standing areas for another few 100 people).

DTZ RABe 514 (Doppelstocktriebzug / doubledeck emu)
Length: 100m
Capacity: 378 seats
Amount: 61
Delivered: 2005-2008
These trains are built by Siemens and will replace older compositions such as Mirages. The trains have low-floor entries and offer more standing room. They are (unlike the DPZ) air-conditioned and have a state of the art passenger information system.

Be556 / S10

The S4 and S10 are served by SZU. Therefore the trains have another design.
This trains are used on the S10 (Mainstation-Uetliberg)




New Stadler Doubledecker EMU
Length: 150m(!)
Capacity: 526 Seats / 1694 passengers max
Ordered: 50 units (and options for more units)
Delivery Date: 2011+

It's the first doubledeckertrain Stadler is going to build. The trains are 50 meters longer than the DPZ/DTZ. A 300 meter train (two compositions together) will be able to transport up to 3400 passengers.




New cars for the DPZs
Ordered: 121 cars

The cars will replace one of the cars in the 20 years old DPZ and will help to bring more comfort. The nomore used old cars will be used for rush-hour S-Bahnlines.

The 115 Re 450 sets are composed by an electric locomotive (Re 450) and three coaches, the 60 RABe 514 are 4-car EMUs built by Siemens (Desiro), thus can carry more passenger in the same length.

About 50 more EMUs are on order, this time they will be build by Stadler. They are the first two-levels trains built by Stadler, who ahs yet built hundreds of GTWs and FLIRTs. They will be numbered RABe 513.

I loved public transport in Zurich, what an awesome city.

Zurich Hauptbahnhoff is brilliant and the S-bahn makes it so easy to get there from the Airport.

I used the S-bahn briefly when in Zürich. An excellent system and an excellent city I agree, City thing!

Zurich Mainstation

Passengers: 350'000 daily (500'000 estimated by 2015)
Tracks: 26 (10 S-Bahn tracks)

The Zurich mainstation is one of the biggest railwaystations in Europe and the biggest in Switzerland. The old main hall is now used as space for events like promotions/openairs/sports/markets.

Zurich's comuters overflow the public transport, it's horrible! Switzerland is really European Champion in using public transport. between 6 and 8 a.m. there is no free space in any pt (Trams, Suburban, bus, ship).
I love the S-bahn Zurich, riding everyday with it

That's true...The Slogan in 1990 was "Die einzige S-Bahn mit garantierten Sitzplätzen" ("The only S-Bahn with guaranted seats") - now you can be happy to find a place to stand at during rush-hours and even the most other time of the day (especially on S5/S11/S12/S15).

Hardbrücke

Another station that has it's own charm. It's the next stop after mainstation for all S-Bahns going to Altstetten or Oerlikon and coming from the line Stadelhofen-Mainstation.
The station is built below the Highway "Hardbrücke" and is served by 2 Trolley and one busline and near the Escher-Wyss Platz (Tramway 4 + 13).

One more info:
The S-Bahn Network introduced in 1990 was using mostly existing tracks. One major new line was build, from Hardbrücke throught the new underground station at the main station (Bahnhof Landesmuseum) by tunnel to Stadelhofen and then thought the Zürichberg-Tunnel to Stetbach and finally by viaducts to Dübendorf/Dietlikon.

No S-Bahn Zürich thread would be complete without posting the übercool train-track intersection near Stettbach:

Track in the front on the ground: Wallisellen - Dübendorf
Double track on the viaduct: Stettbach - Dietlikon
Tracks on the far left and right on the viaduct: Stettbach - Dübendorf

As you can see, trains from Dübendorf never have to cross the tracks of the trains from Dietlikon.

A few days ago the SBB (Swiss federal railway) confirmed that they are planning to introduce a new time dependent charging system. This will most likely increase the ticket prices during rushhour. Today there was an article in Tagesanzeiger about the reaction of the Zurich Transport Authority.

I will try to translate to all non-German speaking:
The Zurich Transport Authorities (ZVV) allready offer a ticket called "9 Uhr Pass" (which is valid from 9 am until the end of the day) which is cheaper than a normal one-day-ticket since 1997 and don't see any positive effects during rushhours (and lose 3-4 mio CHF / year because the passengers who used the public transport after 9am can travel cheaper with this ticket).
Basing on surveys and other facts the ZVV disadvise the SBB from their plans.

Hopefully this will stop the crazy plans of the SBB. And because the ZVV is the biggest SBB-client (the S-Bahn Zurich transports 50% of all regional/s-bahn passengers in whole Switzerland) the chances, that the protest will stop these plans are rather good...

Oh God I want Zurich's trains for my city so, so badly.

The Hauptbahnhoff is amazing enough, but the Calatrava station is just brilliant.

The S10 is an interesting line....Starting at mainstation you start underground and afterwards the route is mostly single-track...Very special for an S-Bahn with an 10 minutes interval

Early snowfalls interrupt S-Bahn network

It was a sad morning for all commuters in the Zurich Area. Not only tram- and buslines operated with delays, especially the S-Bahn network got stuck in the snow. All lines drove with delays between 10 minutes up to more than an hour.

Cracked trees, frozen track-switches and car accidents were the reasons for the heavy delays on the S-Bahnnetwork during the morning rush hour. But not only the delays bothered the commuters - a lot motorists used the public transport instead of their cars. The S-Bahn which allready is on it's capacity limit during normal rush hours had to transport even more people than usual.
