Durchmesserlinie project completed
27 Oct 2015

SWITZERLAND: The eight-year Durchmesserlinie project to increase capacity by eliminating the need for east–west trains to reverse at Zürich Hauptbahnhof was officially completed with a ceremony marking the end of Phase 2 on October 26.

Phase 1 of the 9·6 km Durchmesserlinie comprised the 4·8 km S-shaped Weinberg Tunnel linking Zürich Hauptbahnhof and Oerlikon, which opened for local services in June 2014.

Phase 2 included the construction of the 394 m long Kohlendreieck and 1 156 m Letzigraben flyovers. These enable long-distance trains to cross over from the main line on the north side of the approaches to Hauptbahnhof to the Weinberg Tunnel on the south side, without conflicting movements

It is wrong comparation, because:
- Zurich doesn't relocate railways out of urban contents developed because of railway from more then century.
- Zurich doesn't support simple landgrabing, there is a regulation.
- Zurich doesn't cut the capacities of existing rail network.
- In Swiss there was tons of public discusions, and at last, there was a referendum about such a project.
- In Swiss is maybe impossible to choose variant of railway junction by polititions, which is one of the worst by expert mind (in term of passenger transport).

New Trams for Zurich

The City of Zürich will get 70 new Bombardier Flexity 2 Trams between 2018 and 2023. They will cost 358 Mio Swiss Francs.

Bombarider won the competition against Siemens, CAF, and Stadler.

Very similar Trams are already in use in the City of Basel:

For Zurich they will get a new front design and blue and white coloring.

I can also report that track #3 has been reopened to service with the last timetable change and is now used by S24.

The track was closed years ago due to the demolition of the temporary station (tracks 51-54) and following construction works.
