Update on 8th St Metromover station

Quote:
The Eighth Street Metromover station, which shut down a year ago to be integrated into Swire Properties Inc.’s Brickell City Centre, is in final stages of construction, said Karla Damien, public information officer for Miami-Dade County Transit. She said the station is scheduled to reopen in late September or early October. Enhancements include new escalators, a new elevator, a third-level open-space connecting walkway to Brickell City Centre, new stairs, improved landscaping and platform amenities, such as new signage, a new public-announcement system and new surveillance cameras, she wrote in an email.

FTA announces TOD grants
16 Sep 2015

USA: The Federal Transit Administration announced grants totalling $19·5m from its Transit-Oriented Development Planning Pilot Program on September 14. The funding will go towards detailed planning in 17 metropolitan areas.

‘Transit-oriented development is critical to the success of new projects and to the economy of the local communities they serve’, said FTA Acting Administrator Therese McMillan.

Six of the 21 projects concern BRT corridors. The remaining 15 cover a mixture of urban rail modes

...

Transport projects in Florida have been allocated $2·5m. Half of this is going towards promoting TOD along the proposed Tri-Rail Coastal Link, a 137 km commuter rail line connecting Miami with Jupiter to the north. The other half will be used to study TOD in Fort Lauderdale, including on the planned Wave Streetcar route

Overlaying a light-rail system over the expanse of the S.E. Florida Metro area, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and, unlike the proposed heavy rail, #AAF, all communities in between.

That would be too long a line for LRT. A Web LRT network should be built outward from Downtown Miami to Miami Beach via Port Miami , North along the FEC to North Miami , West to Sweetwater , servicing the Marlins Park & a line from Miami Beach to Golden Beach...

I wonder how amenable the FEC is to allowing running and bike paths on their row?

Either spend the money to do it right or don't do it at all. These half measures are a joke and setting up for failure down the line.

There is no transit between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The FEC corridor goes through the heart of most coastal cities north of Miami. These are already the densest in the region. There is more sprawl developing to the west and is not set up as well as the corridor lining the FEC. East of 95 are areas already open and ready for a denser development pattern and the creation of walkable neighborhoods all along the corridor. East of 95 is where there over 300 residential towers under construction. This IS radiating north from Downtown. Yes there should be a line from Miami Beach to Sweetwater/FIU. There are LRT lines more than 115 miles long.

An Electrified Commuter Rail line would be better for a distance like that...and a few connecting LRT networks...

Hitachi Rail USA opens Miami assembly plant
Thursday, March 17, 2016

HITACHI Rail USA officially opened its new 13,000m2 rail vehicle assembly plant at Medley, Florida, when the mayor of Miami-Dade County Mr Carlos Gimenez inaugurated the facility with the unveiling of a full-size mock up of the new metro train for Miami Metrorail

The plant, which is Hitachi Rail's first in the United States, will assemble 136 metro cars for Miami, including 272 motor bogies, under a $US 313m contract awarded to AnsaldoBreda by Miami-Dade County Commission in November 2012.
