You're right that Rome is a touristy city, and Milan is not. But that's not necessarily how airlines plan their routes.

Even if most people on that Asiana flight are economy passengers who want to go to Rome for tourism reasons, if the business and first class passengers are more interested in Milan then Asiana will heed to the demands of that high-paying minority and send the airplane to Milan.

Additionally, Milan may not be a major tourism destination itself, but tourists can catch a connecting flight to Rome or Florence or the Amalfi Coast or a train to Venice or Bologna or to Genoa where they will board a Mediterranean cruise.

And thirdly, not everyone on that Asiana flight is Korean tourists headed for Italy. There may be Japanese or Chinese or Taiwanese tourists, or Japanese/Chinese/Taiwanese business travelers headed for Milan (and they changed flights at ICN), or there may be Italians returning to Italy from Korea/Japan/China/Taiwan, or there might be French/Germans/Swiss/Spaniards changing flights at MXP...there are so many additional factors.

I'm simplifying it a bit, but airlines don't necessarily plan routes based on most passengers' final destination.

Well, it must be said that in recent years, Milan has experienced a boom in tourists but compared to Rome or Venice, Milan still nothing.

Milan living on finance, business, and fashion industries (fashion, if I may say, he lives here).

You are absolutely right that a city should not necessarily need a tourist town to attract a intercontinental flights (not coincidentally, Jet Airways, TAM Linhas Aereas, Singapore Airlines, American Airlines, Air China, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Ethiad, Oman Air they have in Milan Malpensa their main location in Italy) and the fact that Asiana is more interested in sending the plane to Milan is also due to fly Asiana cargo already present in Milan with a 747F, then an Asiana passenger flight would also offer greater cargo capacity.

The coincidence is a bit 'difficult because a flight Florence-Malpensa does not exist for domestic flights, we must rely upon Easyjet (a Low Cost carrier), but there is Frecciarossa, which leaves from Malpensa to Naples (and it takes 4 hours) and stops in Bologna , Florence and Rome, then to Malpensa, exactly as you said yourself, get all the foreigners who board in Savona (Savona is the hub of Costa Cruises) to take a cruise on the Mediterranean (believe me, take a cruise with Costa is really a great experience, its ships are really great).

In the third place I give you more reason, in fact, many times the Korean flight to Malpensa (but also the Cathay Pacific flight) is full of Japanese who come to Milan (believe me when I say that we are invaded by the Japanese in Milan ).

Finally, in fact, the airlines use different criteria to determine if the flight will yield the fruits or not.

Milan has a business market and a large quantity of goods that can be loaded into the holds of passenger planes.

Infact Ryanair doesn't fly to Malpensa but from 13th may, due to works on the runway of the Orio al Serio airport (where Ryanair operates), Ryanair will operate at Malpensa T2 for three weeks.
