Air India launches direct flights to Rome, Milan from Delhi

Flag carrier Air India launched direct flight services to Italian cities of Rome and Milan, providing a seamless connectivity to the south-central European country. The state-run airline will operate a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in a two-class configuration - 18 business and 238 economy class seats - on the route.
These flights will be operated from Delhi to Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Rome and Malpensa Airport in Milan on a triangular route with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, an Air India release said here.

While the Delhi-Rome-Milan-Delhi flight (AI-123) will operate on four days - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sundays - the Delhi-Milan-Rome-Delhi service will run on the other days of the week, it said. By starting the maiden service to the key European country, Air India has fulfilled a long-standing demand of not only Indians residing in Italy but also the travel and tourism industry, the release said. So far, passengers from India flying to these cities had to change to other airlines or transit at international hubs in West Asia.

Alitalia, Etihad named official Milan Expo 2015 airlines

Alitalia and Etihad will be the official airlines of Milan Expo 2015, the Italian carrier's CEO Gabriele Del Torchio announced Wednesday. The two airlines will provide 100 flights a day to and from Milan during Expo, which takes place from May to October next year. United Arab Emirates company Etihad has agreed to buy a 49% stake in the struggling Alitalia and the deal is expected to be completed in the coming months.

Expo's agreement with the airlines will lead to Milan being linked to 866 cities across the globe through 125 direct flights and a further 741 via one-stop connections. An estimated 20 million visitors are expected to attend Expo 2015, of which approximately 7.6 million will travel to Milan by air, with 1.5 million arriving from intercontinental destinations, 3.3 million from international destinations and 2.8 million from within Italy.

"Expo 2015 will be a remarkable opportunity for Italy," said Del Torchio. "We could not miss being part of it, and we are very proud that Alitalia and Etihad Airways have been jointly chosen as the official global airline carriers... "Alitalia and Expo 2015 share the same values and vision - the pursuit of excellence, style and elegance typical of the 'Made in Italy' brand. "We are also committed to showcasing Italy's renowned cuisine, design, fashion and art".

The two companies plan to implement a marketing and communication drive for Expo including communication to loyalty program members, print and digital campaigns, and social media activities. "We want 20 million people to visit the exhibition site. We expect 8 million coming from abroad. We know that a worldwide operating asset is needed to support us in reaching this goal," said Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 Company.

"The partnership with Alitalia and Etihad Airways is in line with our target. "From now on all the initiatives will have a double value. "On the one hand they will be useful to promote the event. On the other hand they will make travelling to Milan and leaving Milan easier. "In this way they will also contribute to give the best welcome to all people visiting Italy taking part in the event".

All right... confirmed that it will be a year-round service (from 18 June 2014), with up to 5x weekly service during the summer. So far, what I found for the summer schedule (via mock booking):

AC894 YYZ2055 - 1110+1MXP 763 x24
AC895 MXP1255 - 1610YYZ 763 x35

The aircraft used will be from the mainline fleet, not Air Canada Rouge.

Why is the airport being expanded? I thought ever since Alitalia left the airport lost a big chunk of travelers. Aren't we well below capacity?

Are there plans to reconstruct the B pier, especially at gates B1-B13? Very old sector.

Rail link from Milan’s Malpensa airport to Switzerland will re-start next month

The real work, the kind done with bulldozers, will start early in September. The new railway between Arcisate (Varese) and Stabio (Switzerland), which is an integral part of the broader connection between Milan’s Malpensa Airport and the Canton of Ticino, is trying to exit the dead end where it has languished for the past several years.

Infrastructure Minister Graziano Delrio, along side the CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato, Michele Mario Elia and the president of the Lombardy region Roberto Maroni, drafted the new development plan during a visit to the construction site (on the Italian side). If there are no further delays, because there can never be enough caution when it comes to Arcisate-Stabio, the work is set to be completed by May 2017, while the first train is expected to be in operation by December 2017.

The new contract was awarded by Ferrovie dello Stato unit RFI to the Rome-based Salcef firm. The total investment is worth €261 million. The Arcisate-Stabio line, which is 8 kilometers long, has turned into an embarrassment for the the area, whose residents now demand a rapid conclusion.

Six years ago, July 24 2009, the first stone was laid in the construction site. In the first three years, 40% of the project was completed. Today, three years later, the progress is still not even at 50%. However, now everyone is committed to bringing the infrastructure to fruition. The Arcisate-Stabio work was halted upon the discovery of levels of natural arsenic in the excavation site that exceeded legal limits. It took about three years (from 2011 to 2014) to identify suitable sites to store the dirt. Targeted analyses have been carried out in this period, different solutions have been studied with a process of approval, and the projects for the adoption of the preselected solution have been developed.

The Arcisate-Stabio line will connect Varese with the Ticino Canton and with Como (through the Mendrisio junction) and will allow for easy access to the Malpensa hub from central and southern Swiss cities. Furthermore, it will be connected, thanks to the Gallarate railway junction, to the Semplon (Lausanne, Geneva, and Berne) and Gotthard directions (Bellinzona and Lugano).
