Are you from Inverness-proper, NL, or somewhere nearby?

I don't doubt it - I was just doing a take on that Inverness thing the advertising always does.

It looks like the longest is still the 136 miles from just outside Campbeltown to Glasgow.

I think that one will take some beating...!

I think in Scotland (and by default the UK) the reason we don't have really distant signposts is that they just post the closest large town/city as the furthest point on that route or continuation of that route.

Or altenatively, with Carlisle being signposted on the M8 to signify the first large town/city in England.

I may of course be completely wrong!

That sounds right.

I know here in northern Liverpool we have distance signs for Birmingham.. which doesn't really follow that rule though, seeing as the next nearest city is either Manchester, Chester or Preston.

There's one for Perth at 111 miles when you leave Inverness...I'll see if I can find one for Glasgow or Edinburgh in the same area.

I drove to Torridon with my brother and sister in 2003, which is obviously a very long journey from the Midlands in a Renault Clio (although I did share the driving with my brother) and I remember being shocked when we reached Perth only to see that Inverness was STILL over 100 miles away! Plus we had the miles of twisty roads to do after that. I'm sure it took us 8 hours or something altogether.

The distance signs on the motorways in Scotland seem to be more recurring than they do England.

Well, that's what I thought going up to Stirling on Wednesday.

Just to let everyone here know that the "Glasgow 136" sign at Campbeltown has recently been surpassed, this is by a new sign which has appeared on the A9 northbound round about Aviemore which says "Thurso 144"
