French autoroute operator Corfiroute still uses them south of Paris. A10 for example between Paris and Poitiers are all lit. After Poitiers they are all reflective signs due to change of operator: Autoroutes du Sud de la France (ASF) takes over management of the A10 at Poitiers.

In the UK a lot of signs are illuminated with a light bulb on top, like this



There are some internally illuminated ones, but not so many

Tons of these were in Prague, not that much surviving nowadays. Example on StreetView.

Most of the Gantry Signs for the M8, M74, M77 & M80 Motorways in Glasgow, Scotland are internally illuminated, they're unique in the UK as they have a different style to those used on other motorways outside of Glasgow and they're the only ones that are internally illuminated. They actually work really well and are easy to use.
